Box Score Atlanta, Ga.- Oglethorpe scored six unanswered runs over the last four innings to defeat the DePauw baseball team by a final score of 10-4, Wednesday night at Anderson Field.
The Tigers dropped to 3-10 on the year, while the Stormy Petrels improved to 11-9 overall.
DePauw jumped out to an early lead, scoring runs in the opening two innings. In the first, Ryan Grippo drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on Lucas Italiano's single to right. Grippo and Italiano moved up a base on a double steal and Grippo scored on Mike Hammel's sacrifice fly to center.
Jack Thompson led-off the second inning with a single up the middle. Johnny Gbur laid down a sacrifice bunt and Thompson beat the throw to second, giving the Tigers another scoring opportunity with two men-on and nobody out. Gbur was caught stealing, but Collin Henry followed with a sac fly to give DePauw a 2-0 lead.
Oglethorpe used a pair of homeruns to take a 4-2 lead in the third. Joey McAlpin earned a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Andre Turnquest homered to left field, tying the contest. Spencer Transue singled to center and scored on Patrick Kulick's longball to right.
In the top of the fourth, Thompson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second when Gbur was hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout and a foul out, Ryan Allee singled to right, plating both runners.
Tied at 4-4, Oglethorpe regained the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout and a throwing error. The Petrels added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Transue's two-RBI single to left. On the play, Allee was involved in a collision at the plate and was forced to leave the game due to injury.
Up 8-4, the Petrels added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Vernon Trice walked and moved to second as Turnquest reached on an error. Transue followed with an RBI single and Kulick added an RBI ground out.
Tyler Holt took the loss, tossing 4.1 innings with seven hits, six strikeouts and just two walks. Eric Steele threw 1.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits. Nick McCreary pitched a scoreless seventh and Nick Horvath allowed two runs on one hit in the eighth.
Justin Thigpen picked up the win, going 2.1 innings with one strikeout and two hits. Sam Franklin, Sam Traxler, Joe Marco and Transue all pitched in the victory.
DePauw is back in action Saturday, March 28, when they travel to Wittenberg to open up North Coast Athletic Conference play. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
