Box Score Atlanta, Ga.- In its first ever meeting with NCAA Division I opponent Georgia State, the DePauw baseball team pulled the upset, defeating the Panthers 6-2 Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga.
The Tigers improved to 3-7 on the year, while Georgia State dropped to 14-10.
DePauw struck early and often scoring all six of its runs in the first five innings. Ryan Allee jumpstarted the Tigers' offense with a single up the middle. He advanced to third on a one-out single from Lucas Italiano. Cory Meixner reached on an RBI fielder's choice, plating Allee from third.
Following a scoreless second, Joey Plesac reached on an error to open the third. Plesac moved to second on Allee's sacrifice bunt. Italiano delivered a two-out single to right, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Mike Hammel doubled to left and Ryan Hurston reached on error by the third baseman. Johnny Gbur followed with a bunt single to third, loading the bases for DePauw. Collin Henry hit a sacrifice fly to right, plating Hammel and moving Hurston to third. After Gbur stole second, Plesac delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, extending the Tigers' lead to 5-0.
Georgia State broke through for two runs in the bottom half of the fourth on three hits, but had a chance to tack on more. Cam Sperry was hit by a pitch to leadoff and moved to second on Jack Thompson's walk. Rhett Harper singled to third to load the bases and Caden Bailey followed with a one-out single to center, plating two.
The Panthers had two more opportunities to score in the fourth, but both times the DePauw defense stepped up to end the threat. Hammel collected a groundball and made a play at the plate, retiring Harper for the second out of the inning. Luke Leonard singled to left, but Meixner fired a rocket to the plate, nailing Bailey to end the inning.
DePauw added another insurance run in the top of the fifth on two hits and a safety squeeze bunt. Hammel doubled to left with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hurston drew a walk and Gbur laid down a safety squeeze bunt to score Hammel from third.
Georgia State had a prime opportunity in the eighth to cut into the Tigers' lead, but DePauw was able to successfully navigate the threat. With the bases loaded and one out freshman pitcher Tyler Holt relieved Hammel. Holt was able to notch a strikeout and a pop up, preserving the lead.
Hammel picked up the win for the Tigers, going 7.1 innings with eight hits, six strikeouts and just two runs. Holt pitched out of a jam in the eighth and Nick Horvath closed the door in the ninth.
Tanner Love took the loss, going 3.2 innings with seven hits, three earned runs and one strikeout. Jerry Stuckey notched five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief.
The win marks the first victory over a Division I opponent since DePauw beat Butler in the 2003 season.
