Box Score Demorest, Ga.- The DePauw baseball team dropped its opening game of spring break by a 9-1 margin against Piedmont College, Saturday afternoon at Loudermilk Field.
The Tigers dropped to 2-7 overall, while the Lions improved to 14-6.
Piedmont opened the contest by scoring four runs in the opening inning. Griffin Olson reached on a one-out single and moved to third on Evan Gresham's double. After an RBI ground out by Breck Davidson and a walk Michael Barnes hit a two-RBI single up the middle, giving the Lions a 3-0 lead. Austin Brick capped the scoring with an RBI double to left.
DePauw starter Jack Peck held the Lions scoreless over the next five innings, finishing with four strikeouts, three walks and four earned runs on seven hits. Andrew Quinn pitched in the seventh, but was unable to record three outs, giving up five earned runs on four hits and one walk.
Tyler Marcinko had a leadoff double and Olson followed with a single to right. Following a strikeout, Davidson delivered a single to center, plating Marcinko and Olson. Barnes earned a two-out single and Brick walked to load the bases. Casey Parham delivered a two-out double, clearing the bases.
Trailing 9-0, the Tigers were able to push a run across on Max Cohen's RBI single. Johnny Gbur was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout. Cohen delivered a two-out single to center, plating Gbur for DePauw's lone run.
The Tigers had a number of scoring opportunities, leaving runners in scoring position in the second, fifth and seventh, including a bases loaded threat in the top of the seventh inning.
Peck took the loss, dropping to 0-2, while Seth George (2-2) picked up the win, going 6.1 innings with five hits, five strikeouts and just one walk. Lucas Italiano paced the Tigers with two hits in the loss.
DePauw travels to Emory tomorrow for a single nine-inning contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
