Tigers Split Twinbill at Hanover

Hanover, Ind. - Hanover scored five in the eighth inning of game one to take a 9-5 win, but DePauw rallied in the nightcap to take a 6-5 victory in 11 innings. With the split, DePauw moved to 2-6, while Hanover improved to 4-4.

In the opener, DePauw struck first with three in the third as Cory Meixner's sacrifice fly drove in Matt Dorsett before Mile Hammel and Jack Thompson each delivered RBI singles.
Hanover's first run came in the fourth when Alex Lantz homered to left. They evened the count in the fifth as Jack Shine's grounder plated Brett Burke and Matt Newman scored when Ryan Johns reached on an error.

Hammel and Thompson again had run-scoring singles in the sixth to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead.
Newman's single in the bottom of the sixth scored Burke and closed the DePauw advantage to 5-4.
Hanover rallied for five in the eighth as Alex Lantz led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Chris Ares doubled home Lantz and scored on Austin Holloway's base hit to give Hanover a 6-5 lead. John Scheil reached on an error before Shine and Matt Brooks each delivered RBI singles. Johns added a sacrifice fly.

DePauw totaled 13 hits led by Thompson's four and two each from Meixner and Hammel. Ares had three of Hanover's 13 hits, while Newman and Lantz each had two.

Danny Farrar suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1, while Adam Lane picked up the win and Colin Marsh the save.

In the second game, DePauw again scored first as Ryan Grippo led off with a double and scored on Lucas Italiano's single to right.

Hanover matched that in the bottom of the frame as Shine singled with one out and moved to second on a balk. Brooks walked and Johns followed with a run-scoring single to right.

Tom Huettner's double in the second scored Collin Henry and gave DePauw a 2-1 lead. The Panthers gained the lead in the bottom of the second when Travis Thompson led off with a single and moved to third when Scheil reached on an error.  Newman singled home Thompson and Scheil scored on an error.

The Panthers extended the lead to 5-2 in the third when Johns and Nolan Hall singled. Ares reached on an error that allowed Johns to score. Scheil's bases loaded sacrifice fly plated Hall.

Henry led off the DePauw fourth with a double and scored on Grippo's double to cut the lead to 5-3.

DePauw evened the score in the sixth as Grippo's one-out double scored Henry who left off the inning with a single. Grippo scored when Ryan Allee reached on an error. 

The teams were scoreless for the final three innings to force extra innings. In the tenth, the Tigers placed runners on second and third with two outs, but couldn't score. Hanover loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the tenth, but couldn't push home the game winner.

In the 11th, Italiano led off with a double and moved to third on Rick Okazaki's sacrifice bunt. Thompson then drove in the eventual game winner with a single to right.

Italiano and Grippo each had three of DePauw's 11 hits, while Henry added two. Shine, Johns, Ares and Thompson each had two of Hanover's 10 hits.

Nick Horvath picked up the win and improved to 2-1, while Chase Justus suffered the loss. DePauw's Tyler Holt entered the game in the fourth and held the Panthers scoreless for six innings and with just two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, March 21, with a 3 p.m. game at Piedmont.
