Tigers Earn Doubleheader Split on a Wild Saturday Against Capital

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Indianapolis, Ind.- The DePauw baseball team earned a split in a pair of extra-innings contests against Capital University, Saturday afternoon at Bishop Chatard High School.

The Tigers picked up their first win of the season, moving to 1-5 on the year, while Capital sits at 5-6 overall.

Game one was scoreless through the first three innings, before the Crusaders broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth. Logan Bastin hit a lead-off double to center and scored on Justin Ennis' one-out double. Ennis moved to third and then scored on an infield single from Tyler Gibbons.

DePauw answered in the bottom half of the inning, tallying a run on a two-out single. Lucas Italiano singled to right and advanced to third on Cory Meixner's double. Meixner overran second base and was tagged out on the play. Mike Hammel stepped to the plate and knocked a single to right center, plating Italiano.

Capital stretched its lead to 4-1 in the seventh on four hits. Jake Foley singled to third and moved to second on Brett Colburn's walk. Foley and Colburn advanced on a steal and Foley scored on Bastin's double down the right field line. Matthew Carnahan appeared to have driven in the Crusaders' fourth run on a sacrifice fly, but Colburn left early from third, resulting in a double play.

Ennis collected a two-out double, allowing Bastin to score from second. Austin Underwood singled to center, but DePauw center fielder, Collin Henry threw a bullet to retire Ennis at the plate.

Trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth, Italiano got things started by singling to open the frame. Meixner nailed a pitch over the left field fence to draw the Tigers within one. Hammel singled and pinch runner Johnny Gbur promptly stole second. Following a strikeout and flyout, Henry stepped to the plate and hit a grounder to third. The Crusaders' third baseman misplayed it, allowing Gbur to score from third and tie the contest.

Capital had a chance to score in the 12th inning, but a strange infield fly play ended the threat. With one out and men on first and second, Ennis hit a sky-high pop up towards the center of the infield. The base umpire called an infield fly and ruled the batter out. DePauw failed to catch the pop up and as the ball fell to the ground, the Crusader runner ran from first to second and was tagged out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 12th, Ryan Grippo singled to center to start things for the Tigers. He moved to second on a bunt single from Ryan Allee. Italiano delivered the walk-off hit, singling through the right side, plating Grippo from second.

Both starters did not factor in the decision, but pitched well enough to earn the win. Jack Peck threw 5.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing just two runs. Robert Fravel tossed six innings for Capital, allowing just one run on six hits. Nick Horvath took the win for DePauw, pitching one inning in relief, while Underwood took the loss, failing to record an out in the 12th.

Game two featured one of the more unique situations in the game of baseball. The Tigers scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings without recording a hit. In the third, Reid Pittard reached on a two-out error, as the first baseman dropped the ball on what would have been the third out. Grippo reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and Allee followed by reaching on a throwing from third, allowing Pittard to score.

DePauw tallied its second and final run in the fourth as Meixner opened the inning by reaching on an error from third. Meixner stole second and advanced to third on Hammel's groundout. Connor Einertson grounded to first and reached as the throw went to the plate, but Meixner was able to beat the throw and score.

Capital tacked on its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning aided by an error and a passed ball. Carnahan singled to start the inning and Ennis reached on an error. Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Alexander Smith singled to load the bases. DePauw pitcher Wyatt Spector fired a pitch that bounced off Allee's glove, allowing Ennis to score.

The Crusaders had a chance to tie the game or take the lead in the seventh inning, loading the bases with just one out. Tyler Koon and Hammel recorded back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the Tigers' slim lead.

DePauw held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, despite having yet to record a base hit. Zackary Ary singled with one out to start Capital's threat. Ary was thrown out at second on Foley's fielder's choice, but Colburn doubled to right center, plating Foley from first.

Tied after nine innings, the Tigers and Crusaders were yet again headed to extra innings. DePauw failed to score in the top of the 10th, giving Capital a prime opportunity to win the game. Joe Swisher and Smith were hit by pitches to start the inning. Ary reached on a fielder's choice on his sacrifice bunt, loading the bases with no outs. Foley delivered the walk-off single to right center, giving Capital the win.

Jacob Sheaf and Connor Golden combined for the no-hitter, allowing no earned runs and striking out 12 (six each). Golden picked up the win going four innings in relief, while Hammel took the loss.

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Hanover for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
