Tigers Split Two-Game Set with Denison

Granville, Ohio- The Tigers were back in Granville, Ohio to finish up their North Coast Athletic Conference series against Denison. The Big Red won the opener, 3-1, but DePauw rallied to win the nightcap, 3-1.

DePauw moved to 12-15 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC, while Denison is now 16-14 on the year and 12-4 in NCAC play. 

The Big Red struck first in game one, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Tucker Davison. DePauw answered in the third with a run of their own. Ryan Grippo started the inning with a single and JB McCallum's sacrifice bunt moved Grippo to second. Michael Hartnagel flied out to right field allowing Grippo to get to third and Robbie Stein drove Grippo in on a single through the left side.

Denison scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead. In the fifth, Conner Madey singled to center and advanced to second on a one-out walk to Alex Enrique. JT Timmer relieved DePauw's starting pitcher, Jack Peck, and got the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice. With two outs and runners on first and third, Georgie Montes doubled to right center, scoring one run.

Ryan Mulligan singled to start the sixth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mulligan scored on a single up the middle by Davison, adding an important insurance run for the Big Red.

The Tigers went down in order in both the fifth and sixth innings and managed to scratch out just one hit in the seventh inning; unable to mount a comeback.

Peck took the loss, falling to 2-2, after going 4.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits. Connor Murphy picked up the complete game win for Denison, improving to 5-3, after scattering six hits and striking out three.

In game two, Denison scored first tallying one run in the first inning. Andrew Touhy drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. A two-out single by Montes drove in Touhy giving the Big Red a 1-0 advantage.

DePauw was held scoreless through the first five innings, but finally tied the contest in the top of the sixth. Hartnagel got things started with a single through the left side. Stein reached safely on a fielder's choice with a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Hartnagel to move to third. Zach Starr followed with a double, tying the contest at 1-1.

The Tigers were unable to capitalize with two men in scoring position and no outs as Brendon Pashia and Cory Meixner struck out and Collin Henry lined out to end the inning.

Tied at 1-1, the Tigers took their first lead of the day in the top of the eighth. Stein started with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Starr. Pashia was intentionally walked to set up a force play and Meixner drew a walk to load the bases. Pinch hitter, Lucas Italiano, walked forcing in Stein from third. Zach Wade drove in the Tigers' final run with a sacrifice fly to right.

Denison would go quietly in the eighth and have any hopes of a comeback in the ninth snuffed out by Wade who threw out Alex Enrique, trying to steal second, to end the game.

Nick Horvath picked up the win, improving to 1-1, after working one inning in relief and giving up one hit. Alex Sroka notched his first save of the year, shutting the door in the ninth.

Kyle Colgain dropped to 3-4 on the year after going 7.1 innings, scattering six hits and giving up two earned runs.

The Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they host Rose-Hulman for a single, nine-inning game starting at 4:15 p.m.
