Box Score Demorest, Ga. - A three-run ninth lifted DePauw to a 5-4 win at Piedmont and snapped the Tigers' three-game losing streak. The Tigers improved to 3-7 with the win, while the Lions dropped to 15-7.
Trailing 4-2 entering the top of the ninth, DePauw's rally started when Zach Starr was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Brendon Pashia's double. Lucas Italiano followed with a single that scored Starr before pinch-hitter Collin Henry moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Pat Lyons followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Pashia and an error on the play allowed pinch-runner Reid Pittard to score.
J.T. Timmer relieved Brendan Bolander and gave up a pair of one-out singles before the Tigers turned a double play to end the game.
DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first as Ryan Grippo led off with a single, moved to second on Robbie Stein's sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Starr then drove in Grippo with a grounder to second.
Piedmont countered in the bottom of the second as Michael Barnes led off with a triple and scored on Daniel Lindsey's grounder. They tacked on two more in the third when Keith Grabowski led off with a single and moved to second on Josh Bailey's base hit. Breck Davidson followed with a two-run double to make it 3-1.
That score held up until the top of the seventh when Pashia led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball before Lyons singled him home.
In the bottom of the seventh, Bailey led off with a walk and moved to second on Davidson's single. Evan Gresham reached on a fielder's choice that forced Bailey at third. Barnes followed with a single to load the bases before Terrance Worthy drew a bases loaded walk that plated Davidson.
Pashia and Lyons each had two of DePauw's six hits. Barnes led Piedmont with three of the Lions' 11 hits, while Bailey and Davidson had two apiece.
Bolander picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning and improved to 1-0, while Timmer collected his first save of the season. Allen Torkarz dropped to 3-1 after giving up three runs in the ninth.
DePauw returns to action tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. contest at Oglethorpe.
