#11 DePauw Splits NCAC Baseball Twinbill

Elliott Ross Delaware, Ohio - After winning game one of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan, DePauw rallied from a 9-0 deficit in game two to tie Ohio Wesleyan, but the Battling Bishops won the game in the bottom of the ninth for the split,

DePauw, ranked 11th in the coaches' poll and 14th by D3baseball, com matched the school-record win streak of 12 games (previously set in 1996) with the 9-2 win in the opener before falling, 10-9, in the nightcap. The Tigers are now 24-4 overall and 9-1 in NCAC West play, while Ohio Wesleyan is 14-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Rob McPike and a fielder's choice off the bat of Robbie Stein. Pat Lyons belted a solo homer in the second to make it 3-0.

Lyons' sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Brendon Pashia before Sam Swafford scored when McPike reached on an error. Jason Cohen then followed with a three-run homer to push the lead to 8-0. Back-to-back doubles by Swafford and J.B. McCallum in the fifth pushed the lead to 9-0.

Ohio Wesleyan's runs came in the fifth as Nathan Strome was hit by a pitch and scored on Sean Vollenwider's double. Vollenweider scored on Steve Gaydos' single.

DePauw totaled nine hits led by two each from Lyons and Swafford. J.J. Buckey had two of the Battling Bishops' five hits.

Elliott Ross (pictured) improved to 5-1 with the complete game win, while Steve Skartsten dropped to 5-2.

Ohio Wesleyan quickly took the lead in the nightcap with four unearned runs in the first before adding one in the second and two each in the third and fourth innings, respectively, for a 9-0 lead.

The Tigers, meanwhile, struggled against Ohio Wesleyan starter Charles Cooper as he allowed just two hits and struck out 10 over the first seven innings. The Battling Bishops went to the bullpen and the Tigers reached the board with three in the eighth.

Lyons led off with a double and scored in McPike's single. Cohen and Alex Wright followed with singles to load the bases before Pashia reached on an error which allowed McPike and Cohen to score and cut the lead to 9-3.

Lyons led off the ninth by reaching on an error before Zach Galyean was hit by a pitch and both McPike and Cohen drew walks to make it 9-4. Wright and pinch-hitter Alex Berlyn followed with RBI singles and Pashia and Swafford each lifted sacrifice flies to right to even the score at 9-9.

Strome led off the ninth with a double before Seth Frentsos reached on a fielder's choice bunt. Brandon Marker's bunt single loaded the bases and Gaydos drove in the game winner with a single to center.

DePauw totaled eight hits led by Wright's three and Cohen's two. James Toland and Vollenweider each had four of Ohio Wesleyan's 21 hits, while Zach Bott and Strome added three each. Gaydos, Tim Knezovich and Marker each added two.

Alex Sroka dropped to 2-1 with the loss, while Marker improved to 2-0.

The teams wrap up their four-game series with a Saturday doubleheader.
