#14 DePauw Drops Doubleheader to Wabash

Greencastle, Ind. - In the final tuneup before the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, 14th-ranked DePauw dropped a pair of 7-4 decisions to visiting Wabash. DePauw dropped to 30-10 overall and finished NCAC regular season play at 12-4, while the Little Giants finished their season at 18-22 overall and 8-8 in conference play.

Wabash struck first in game one as John Holm led off the second with a triple but was caught off third on Andrew Rodgers' grounder. Rodgers reached second on the play before Tyler Hampton singled him to third. Tyler Owensby followed with an RBI single to give Wabash a 1-0 lead.

DePauw scored two in the bottom of the second as Jason Cohen led off with a double and moved to third on Alex Wright's single. Robbie Stein doubled home Cohen and Sam Swafford plated Wright with a base hit.

The Little Giants evened the score in the fifth when Robby Hechinger reached on an error and scored on Chris Deig's double. Wabash took a 3-2 lead in the sixth as John Holm led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hampton then drove in Holm with a single.

Wabash tacked on four in the seventh as Deig led off with a single and moved to second on John Pennington's sacrifice bunt. Holm and Rodgers walked and Hampton followed with a grand slam to left off of reliever Dylan Sheldon.

DePauw's final runs came in the seventh as J.B. McCallum drew a two-out walk and pinch-hitter Zach Galyean reached second on an error which allowed McCallum to go to third. Rob McPike then followed with a two-run single.

The Tigers totaled nine hits led by Cohen's two. Wabash also had nine hits with Hampton leading with three and Deig and Owensby totaling two each. Hampton drove in five in the win.

Andrew Swart improved to 4-5 with the win, while Andy Manson dropped to 6-2.

In game two, Wabash scored twice in the first as Deig singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Pennington walked, Montana Timmons advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Holm reached on an error which allowed Deig to score and Rodgers plated Pennington after reaching on a fielder's choice.

The Little Giants made it 5-0 in the second when Hechinger doubled with two outs, Deig walked and Pennington homered to left. The lead went to 6-0 in the fifth when Holm was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on Rodgers' base hit.

DePauw reached the board in the bottom of the fifth when Alex Berlyn singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on J.B. McCallum's double down the left field line. Galyean then drove in McCallum with a single up the middle.

The Tigers cut the lead to 6-3 in the sixth when Cohen led off with a walk and scored on Wright's double. Then, in the seventh, the Tigers added another run as Aaron Henry led off with a walk and went to third on Galyean's double. McPike reached on an error which scored Henry. Wabash reliever J.T. Miller who entered the game in the sixth, struck out the last two DePauw batters to end the inning.

DePauw had nine hits with Galyean totaling four and Wright two. Deig had four of Wabash's 11 hits.

Jeff Soller improved to 2-2 for the Little Giants, while Derek Asuras dropped to 0-1. J.T. Miller recorded his first save.

The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Thursday, May 3, in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Tigers will face the second-seeded team from the NCAC East.
