#11 DePauw Sweeps Case Western to Earn Series Split

Greencastle, Ind. -Hobs Donovan One day after dropping their first doubleheader of the season, the 11th-ranked DePauw baseball team came right back and notched its 10th doubleheader sweep of the year with 5-1 and 4-2 victories over Case Western Reserve.

The Tigers improved to 29-7 on the season which equals the second-most wins in school history. Case Western dropped to 25-14-1.

In game one, Case Western quickly took a 1-0 lead as Bobby Marko led off with a single and Matt Keen doubled him home. Keen later was thrown out at the plate after Sam Alexander hit a grounder to the mound which Hobs Donovan fielded and  threw to catcher Ryan Allee for the tag and out.

The Tigers countered in the bottom of the first as Zach Starr, Zach Galyean and Rob McPike each singled to tie the game before Alex Wright plated Galyean with a sacrifice fly.

DePauw expanded the lead to 3-1 in the fifth as McPike led off with a single but was forced at second on Wright's grounder. Brendon Pashia followed with a single before pinch-hitter Cory Meixner singled down the left field line scoring Wright.

The Tigers wrapped up the scoring in the fifth when Galyean doubled and McPike followed with a homer to right.

DePauw totaled 12 hits led by McPike's three and two each from Galyean, Pashia and Pat Lyons. Five different players collected one hit apiece for the Spartans.

Donovan (pictured above) improved to 3-0 with the win and struck out eight, while Jarrett Gish dropped to 6-2.

Andy Manson In the second game, the teams played a scoreless first for the first time in the series, but Case Western struck for a pair in the second as Andrew Gronski walked and Peter Zak homered to left.

DePauw cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Robbie Stein led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Ryan Allee then lined a single off the pitcher's foot which went into left field allowing Stein to score.

The Tigers tied the score in the fifth when Allee reached second on an infield throwing error, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Galyean's two-out double to left center.

Alex Berlyn led off the DePauw seventh with a walk and went to second on Allee's sacrifice bunt. Lyons then singled up the middle driving home Berlyn and giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

DePauw added a run in the eighth as Wright singled and went to second on Stein's sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved him to third before Berlyn singled down the right field line to make it 4-2.

The Tigers totaled 10 hits and were paced by Galyean with three and Lyons with two. Jordan Dague had three of Case Western's five hits.

Andy Manson (pictured right) improved to 6-1 with the win, while Josh Suvak dropped to 0-1 in his first start. Joe Wojda pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 25, when it hosts Rose-Hulman in a single game at 4 p.m.
