DePauw Sweeps Doubleheader with Transylvania

Louisville, Ky. - DePauw improved to 6-1 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader with Transylvania by scores of 7-2 and 6-3. The Pioneers dropped to 2-4.

DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game as Alex Berlyn singled home Alex Wright who led off the inning with a walk. Transylvania took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Ken Riley and Graham Winchester each singled and advanced a base on Johnny Renz's sacrifice bunt. John Michael's ground out scored Riley and Sam Liggett's single brought home Winchester.

Zach Starr tied the score in the fifth as his bases loaded single scored Rob McPike. The Tigers won the game in extra innings as they scored five in the eighth. Brendon Pashia's triple scored a pair and Pashia scored when McPike reached on an error. Jason Cohen singled before Alex Wright plated McPike with a base hit. Robbie Stein then singled home Cohen to round out the scoring.

DePauw pounded out 14 hits led by Berlyn and Starr with three each and two from McPike, Cohen and Wright. Four different Pioneers had one hit apiece.

Conor Heneghan improved to 1-0 with the win in relief of Michael Chiaro who allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. Danny Niehaus suffered the loss. 

In the nightcap, Galyean singled in the first and advanced to third on an error. McPike's sacrifice fly scored Galyean. Matt Dorsett's two-run double in the second made it 3-0 before Cohen singled home Galyean and Wright's grounder brought home McPike.

Transylvania scored three in the fourth when Ben Belham's singled scored Nick Edwards and Zach Bynum's triple brought home Liggett and Kevin Brinkman. Cohen tripled in the fifth and scored on Stein's single.

DePauw totaled eight hits with Zach Galyean and Stein each totaling a pair. Transylvania finished with eight hits with Zach Riney ad Liggett each finishing with two.

Jack Peck improved to 1-0 with the win and Brendan Bolander picked up his first save, while Matt Morgan suffered the loss.

The Tigers open the home season by hosting Mount St. Joseph in a 2:30 p.m. single game on Tuesday.
