DePauw Baseball Opens NCAC Play with Sweep of Wittenberg

Greencastle, Ind. - In its first North Coast Athletic Conference games in program history, 26th-ranked DePauw swept a doubleheader from Wittenberg by scores of 8-6 and 4-1 at Walker. Field.

DePauw improved to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC with the sweep, while Wittenberg dropped to 13-5 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play.

In game one, the hosts scored three in the top of the first as Pat Lyons walked and Zach Galyean doubled. Rob McPike loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Jason Cohen drove in Lyons with a sacrifice fly and Alex Wright singled home Galyean. The Tigers' third run crossed the plate when Brendon Pashia hit into a force out at second, but the throw to complete the double play was errant, allowing McPike to score.

Wittenberg added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the score at 3-3. David Moore led off the third with a single and moved to second on Zac Wilson's sacrifice bunt. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Brandon Reaman's ground out.

In the fourth, Grant Goodwin led off by reaching on an error and advanced to second on Tyler Grau's sacrifice bunt. Goodwin came home on Brandon Jordan's single to center. Reaman led off the fifth with a single  and scored on Matt Hampp's double to left center.

DePauw regained the lead in the fifth as Galyean walked, McPike doubled and Cohen walked to load the bases. Wright hit a liner to third which glanced off the third baseman's glove and scored Galyean. One out later Alex Berlyn delivered a grand slam to left, giving DePauw an 8-3 lead.

Wittenberg added another in the sixth when Jordan doubled, moved to second on Moore's ground out and scored on Wilson's single. Graham Wolff led off the Wittenberg seventh with a single and scored when Goodwin doubled and the relay throw went past the cutoff. Grau followed with a ground out which scored Goodwin.

DePauw totaled six hits led by Galyean with two, while Wittenberg had 12 hits led by two each from Wilson, Wolff, Tim Little and Jordan.

Elliott Ross improved to 3-1, while Matt Rupert dropped to 4-1. DePauw's Joe Wojda picked up his fourth save.

DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game two as Lyons singled and Galyean reached on an error. McPike reached on a fielder's choice which forced Galyean at second before Cohen drove in Lyons after reaching on an error. Wright then lifted a sacrifice fly which scored McPike.

Berlyn reached on an error to lead off the second, moved to second on Sam Swafford's ground out and to third on J.B. McCallum's single. Berlyn scored to make it 3-0 when Lyons reached on a fielder's choice.

Wittenberg reached the scoreboard in the third when Alex Lochard led off with a double and later scored on Wilson's single.

Robbie Stein hit a one-out triple in the sixth and came home on Berlyn's line drive sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-1.

Five different DePauw players collected one hit apiece in the win, while four different Wittenberg players had one each.

DePauw's Andy Manson improved to 4-1 with the four-hit, complete game and struck out four with no walks. Zach Finke dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

The two teams wrap up their series tomorrow with a Noon doubleheader at Walker Field.
