Box Score 2 April 2, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw's Elliott Ross pitched a two-hit shutout and had a perfect game for 7 2/3 innings in leading the Tigers to a 9-0 win in the nightcap of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Oglethorpe as the teams split the twinbill. Oglethorpe won the opener, 17-7.
The Tigers are 9-15 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe is 14-11 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Ross improved to 3-3 and retired the first 23 batters he faced before Adam Brazenas singled through the left side in the eighth.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Alex Wright singled home Rob McPike. They then added three more in the third as Wright knocked in Jason Cohen with a single and Aaron Henry's sacrifice fly brought home Wright. Zach Galyean scored on a balk to make it 4-0.
Wright's single to right in the fourth and a subsequent error on the play allowed McPike to score. Galyean's sixth-inning single scored McPike and gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Two runners scored on an Oglethorpe infield error in the seventh before Cohen tripled home Ben Gardner.
DePauw totaled 12 hits in the win led by Wright and Galyean with three each. McPike and Alex Berlyn each had two. Ross struck out 13 and walked just one in the win, while Emmett Goodman dropped to 3-1 with the loss.
In the opener, Oglethorpe took an 11-0 lead with six in the first, four in the second and one more in the third. The Tigers committed four errors in the first and two more in the second.
DePauw scored four in the bottom of the third as Wright and Brendon Pashia each hit two-run doubles. The Stormy Petrels quickly matched that with six in the top of the fourth to take a 17-4 advantage before the Tigers added two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
McPike and Wright each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Matt Cornwell paced Oglethorpe with three of its 13 hits. Brazenas and Ryan Grau each finished with a pair, while Brazenas drove in four.
T.J. Schmutz improved to 2-0 with the win, while Hobs Donovan dropped to 3-3.
The teams wrap up their series on Sunday with a Noon single game.
