Tigers Blank Centre in Opener; Second Game Halted Due to Rain

April 16, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. —  Hobs Donovan pitched a one-hitter and allowed just three base runners as DePauw took an 11-0 win over Centre in the opening game of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. The second game was halted in the bottom of the fifth with DePauw leading, 9-4. It will be resumed at Noon on Sunday with the regularly scheduled game to follow.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first as Ben Gardner led off with a single and scored on Zach Galyean's double down the left field line. Rob McPike followed with a single before Jason Cohen drove in Galyean with a sacrifice fly to center.

DePauw added two more in the second as Aaron Henry led off with a walk and moved to second on Alex Berlyn's sacrifice bunt. Gardner then singled Henry home and advanced to second on the throw. Zach Galyean laid down a bunt down the third base line and the Colonels' third baseman was late with the tag on Gardner. McPike followed with a sacrifice fly to left which scored Gardner and gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers scored four more in the after McPike led off with a double and moved to third on Cohen's single. Stein reached on a fielder's choice after Centre committed an error on the force at second. McPike scored on the play. Sam Swafford followed with a bunt single to load the bases before Henry drove in Cohen with a single. Berlyn plated Stein with a walk and Gardner drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center.

DePauw rounded out the scoring in the sixth as McPike led off with a triple and scored on Cohen's double. Pinch-hitter Sam Yeary later delivered a sacrifice fly to center which scored Cohen.

The Tigers totaled 15 hits led by Gardner and McPike with three each, while Cohen, Stein and Swafford each had two. Clark had the Colonels' lone hit, a third-inning single.

Donovan improved to 4-4 and struck out seven in the seven-inning complete game, while Joe Nash dropped to 4-5.

The Tigers improved to 13-18 overall and 4-6 in the SCAC, while Centre dropped to 13-19 overall and 6-7 in the conference.
