Strong Pitching Lifts DePauw to Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

March 8, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. —  Bolstered by a pair of strong pitching performances, DePauw picked up a doubleheader sweep over visiting Anderson in the home-opening twinbill at Walker Field. The Tigers won the first game, 2-1, and took the nightcap, 3-2. With the sweep, DePauw improved to 5-5, while the Ravens dropped to 2-2.

Jason Cohen's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth gave DePauw a 1-0 lead in the opener, but Anderson knotted the score in the sixth. Brett Detty singled with one out and moved to third on Michael Tucker's double to left. Austin Young's bloop single to left plated Detty, but DePauw starter Andy Manson retired the next two hitters.

In the bottom of the seventh, Robbie Stein reached base on a failed sacrifice bunt and moved to second on Chris Forbringer's single to left. Ben Gardner was hit by a pitch before Sam Swafford singled to right scoring Stein with the game-winning run.

DePauw totaled eight hits led by Cohen and Forbringer with two each. Young had two of Anderson's five hits.

Manson improved to 1-1 after allowing just five hits in seven innings, while Anderson reliever Dan Schmitz suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1.

The Ravens took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame of the second game as Brady Roundtree led off with a double and Drew Kidd was hit by a pitch. The Tigers tried to get the force at third on Detty's attempted sacrifice bunt but the throw was wide of the DePauw third baseman allowing Roundtree to score. Tucker followed with a single which scored Kidd.

DePauw cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning as Rob McPike singled with two outs and moved to second when Cohen drew a walk. Alex Wright's single to right scored McPike.

The Tigers added the eventual game-winning tallies in the second as Alex Berlyn led off with a single and advanced to second when Zach Starr was hit by a pitch. Aaron Henry's sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third before Swafford singled home Berlyn to even the score. McPike followed with an RBI single which scored Gardner who had earlier reached on a fielder's choice.

McPike had three of DePauw's seven hits, while three different Ravens collected one hit apiece.

Mike Peterson improved to 1-2 with the complete game win as he allowed just three hits and just one over the final eight innings. Kyle Dillon dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, March 12, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
