Box Score 2 March 6, 2011, North Manchester, Ind. — DePauw took game one of its doubleheader at Manchester by a 5-1 score, but the Spartans scored two in the bottom of the ninth and earned a split with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. The Tigers are now 3-5 on the season, while the Spartans are 1-1.
DePauw scored three in the top of the first of game one and it held up. Ben Gardner led off with a single and moved to third on two passed balls. Rob McPike's single plated Gardner with the game's first run. Later in the inning, Alex Berlyn's bases loaded walk scored Jason Cohen and Samuel Yeary's single brought home Alex Wright.
Manchester scored one in the third as Trey Forbes doubled and scored on Ty Foster's single. DePauw added one more in the fourth as Cohen reached on a fielder's choice which scored Gardner. Sam Swafford's sixth-inning single scored Chris Forbringer with the game's final run.
The Tigers totaled 11 hits led by Gardner, Swafford and Berlyn with two each. Manchester had six hits paced by Brad Murphy's two.
Hobs Donovan improved to 1-1 after striking out seven and not allowing a walk in six innings. Justin Scott dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
In the nightcap, Manchester scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win. The Spartans took a 3-0 lead in the third on a two-run single by John Smolinski and one more when Brad Murphy grounded into a double play which scored Foster.
Cohen singled home Aaron Henry in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1 before Gardner and Swafford delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3.
Manchester regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on Jay Sheets' leadoff homer, but it was short-lived as Berlyn drove in Cohen with a ground out in the seventh and Robbie Stein followed with a base hit scoring Wright to give DePauw a 5-4 advantage.
The Spartans loaded the bases in the ninth as Bryce Murphy led off with a walk and Forbes followed with a base hit. Foster's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base before Smolinski was intentionally walked. Brad Murphy then reached on an infield error which scored both Bryce Murphy and Forbes.
DePauw totaled 13 hits led by Cohen with three and Gardner and Swafford with two each. Forbes and Foster each had three of Manchester's 10 hits, while Sheets added two.
Andy Manson suffered the loss in relief and dropped to 0-1, while Kyle Zabst improved to 1-0.
DePauw hosts Anderson on Wednesday, March 9, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
