DePauw's Rally Falls Short in Loss to Rose-Hulman

Box Score

April 7, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Visiting Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second and made it hold up in a 7-6 win over DePauw at Walker Field. The Tigers dropped to 16-13, while Rose-Hulman improved to 17-6.

Michael Kovacs started Rose-Hulman's scoring in the second with a two-run homer to left. The Engineers loaded the bases with two outs and B.J. Zobrist scored from third on a wild pitch. After Chandler Kent walked to reload the bases, Chris Stemple reached on an infield single which scored Daniel Prochno. A throwing error on the play also allowed Bilse and Kent to score to give Rose-Hulman a 6-0 lead.

DePauw countered with one in the bottom of the second as Ben Gardner drove in Alex Berlyn with a single down the left field line. Kovacs led off the third with his second homer of the day and the Engineers' last run.

Sam Linette's two-run single in the third closed the gap to 7-3 before Jon Newman hit a solo homer in the fifth. Alex Jacques scored from third in the sixth when Taylor Hoffman reached on an error to trim the Engineers' lead to 7-5.

Alex Wright and Sam Linette led off the eighth with walks and Samuel Yeary entered as a pinch-runner for Wright. Berlyn's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and Jacques hit a sacrifice fly to center allowing Yeary to score. A ground out ended the inning and Rose-Hulman turned a double play in the ninth to end the game.

Rose-Hulman totaled eight hits led by Kovacs with three and Bilse with a pair. Gardner had three of the Tigers' 11 hits with Newman and Jacques each adding two.

Matt Green improved to 1-0 with the win, while Mike Peterson dropped to 1-7.
