Tiger Nine Sweep Doubleheader with Illinois Wesleyan

March 6, 2010, St. Louis, Mo. —  DePauw improved to 5-3 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Illinois Wesleyan in games played at Washington University. The Tigers won the opener by a 4-1 score and took the nightcap 7-6 in 10 innings. The games were the first of the season for Illinois Wesleyan.

In the opener, Sam Linette gave the Tigers the lead in the second with a solo homer before DePauw added three in the fourth. Jon Newman led off with a walk and stole second before Rob McPike drove him in with a double. Linette walked and Jason Cohen reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Drew Holy drove in McPike after reaching on a fielder's choice and Linette scored from third on a double steal.

The Titans' lone run came in the sixth when Mike Morrissey led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jeff Grodecki later singled him home.

Linette had two of the Tigers' four hits, while Mark McDermott had two of Illinois Wesleyan's five. Mike Peterson improved to 1-2, while Elliott Ross picked up his first save of the season. Joe Froelich dropped to 0-1.

In the nightcap, Linette's 10th-inning doubled scored Taylor Hoffman from second with the game-winning run.

Illinois Wesleyan took a 4-0 lead in the second as Kevin Callahan drove in Casey McIntosh with a double and McDermott followed with a three-run homer.

DePauw knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning as Alex Berlyn plated Alex Wright and Sam Swafford with a bases loaded double. Newman drove in Aaron Henry with a single and Linette drew a bases loaded walk which scored Berlyn.

The Titans regained the lead in the sixth when Zach Scott singled home McDermott and they extended it to 6-4 in the eighth when Morrisey drove in Ryan Hopp with a single.

Newman's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth brought home Swafford and trimmed the Titans' lead to 6-5. Linette led off the ninth with a single and moved to second on Zachary Galyean's sacrifice bunt. Wright followed with a single scoring Linette with the game-tying run.

In the 10th, Hoffman led off with a single, moved to second on Newman's walk and scored when Linette doubled to right center.

Hoffman and Newman each had three of DePauw's 14 hits, while Linette, Wright and Swafford each had two. The Titans totaled 10 hits with McIntosh leading the way with three. Callahan and McDermott had two hits apiece. Tyler Witham picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 10th, while Paul Kabbes suffered the loss.
