Tigers Split Twinbill at Oglethorpe

March 27, 2010, Atlanta, Ga. —  DePauw rallied from an early, four-run deficit to win the second game of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Oglethorpe and pick up a split of the twinbill. DePauw is 12-9 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC, while the Stormy Petrels are 11-13 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.

Taylor Hoffman gave DePauw a 1-0 lead in the opening inning of the first game with a solo homer, but J.J. Rizzo's two-run shot in the third and Jonathan McWhorter's two-run homer in the fourth gave Oglethorpe a 4-1 lead.

DePauw's Alex Wright hit a solo homer in the fifth, but the Stormy Petrels made it 6-2 with two more in the fifth on consecutive bases loaded singles by Andy Farrey and Adam Brazenas.

Rob McPike's single in the sixth scored Alex Jacques before Oglethorpe scored three unearned runs in the sixth.

Hoffman led DePauw with two of their five hits, while Matthew Cornwell, Rizzo, Farrey and Brazenas each had two of Oglethorpe's 12 hits. Rizzo drove in four in the win.

Mike Peterson dropped to 1-4 with the loss, while Cornwell improved to 5-2.

Oglethorpe jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap as the first five batters reached and the first four scored. McPike's double in the fourth scored Berlyn before the Tigers knotted the score in the sixth on Sam Swafford's two-run double and Berlin's run-scoring single.

The Stormy Petrels regained the lead in the sixth with three unearned runs, but DePauw countered with McPike's RBI single in the seventh and three more in the seventh on Jacques' run-scoring single, and RBI double from Hoffman and a wild pitch which allowed Jacques to score.

DePauw totaled 13 hits led by Hoffman's three and two each from Jacques, McPike, Jason Cohen and Berlyn. Oglethorpe also finished with 13 hits paced by three each from Cornwell and Stephen Archer and two from Brazenas and Jake Spear.

Tyler Witham improved to 3-0 with the win, while Drew Brooks dropped to 0-3.

The teams play a Noon single game on Sunday.
