Tigers Split SCAC Baseball Doubleheader at 16th-ranked Birmingham-Southern

March 20, 2010, Birmingham , Ala. —  DePauw opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader split at 16th-ranked Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers are 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Panthers are 15-3 overall and also 1-1 in the SCAC.

In the opener, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second when Drew Holy scored from third on Jason Cohen's single. The Panthers knotted the score at 1-1 when J.D. Hulse waled with two outs in the fifth, moved to second when Drew Leachman reached on an error. Hulse stole third and scored on an errant throw on the steal attempt.

The scheduled 7-inning game went to extra innings and the Tigers scored five in the top of the ninth. Taylor Hoffman drove in Ben Gardner when he reached on an error before Jon Newman drove in a pair with a double. Sam Linette hit a two-run homer to round out the scoring.

DePauw totaled 12 hits led by three from Cohen and two apiece by Hoffman, Newman and Holy. Leachman had two of Birmingham-Southern's four hits.

Elliott Ross improved to 2-1 after striking out four in two innings of relief. Starter Mike Petersonn allowed just three hits and an unearned run in seven innings. C.Jones suffered the loss.

In the second game, Bruce Maxwell's single in the second scored Brandon Ricco who led off with a double before Hulse's leadoff homer in the third made it 2-0.

Hoffman scored the Tigers' first run when Linette's single  brought him in from third. The Panthers scored two unearned runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth on John Lawroski's single.

Linette's sixth-inning double score Newman who led off the inning with a double. Birmingham-Southern added its final run in the sixth when Leachman doubled and scored on Steven Denton's single.

DePauw totaled seven hits led by Alex Jacques and Linette with two each. Ricco had three of the Panthers' 11 hits with Maxwell and Brian Higginbotham adding two each.

Clay Malcolm picked up the win and improved to 3-1, while Hobs Donovan dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

The teams meet at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Sunday in a single game.
