DePauw Drops Doubleheader to Birmingham-Southern

April 4, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference nightcap with Birmingham-Southern, but the Panthers scored seven and swept the Tigers by scores of 6-2 and 11-10.

In the second game, DePauw rallied from a 3-0 first-inning deficit to take a 5-3 lead with one in the first, two in the fourth and two in the sixth. Birmingham-Southern closed the gap to 5-4 with a single run in the eighth.

The first nine Panthers reached base in the ninth as they plated seven runs including three on a homer by Brian Higginbotham.

Trailing 11-5, DePauw nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the ninth as the first two hitters reached base and Mike Stout slammed a homer off the scoreboard in left. Rob McPike and Chris Schenk each singled before Jack Gavin walked to load the bases. Sam Linette grounded into a fielder's choice allowing McPike to score. Justin Weiner's single scored Schenk to make it 11-10 but the Tigers left two on as the game ended.

All 10 DePauw players who batted collected base hits as the Tigers totaled 15. Jon Newman led with three while Weiner, Taylor Hoffman and McPike each had two. Stout drove in three in the loss. The Panthers finished with 14 hits as all nine of their hitters had at least one. Brandon Ricco, Sam Hill, Darby Weppner, Alex Head and Jon Walker each had two, while Higginbotham drove in four.

Clay Jones improved to 2-1 with the relief win, while John Naramore collected his second save. David Morefield sustained the loss and dropped to 3-1.

In game one, DePauw took a 1-0 lead with one in the first before the Panthers scored three in the sixth. The Tigers closed the gap to 3-2 on Chris Casella's two-out double in the seventh which scored Linette, but Birmingham-Southern scored three in the ninth to wrap up the win.

Five different Tigers collected one hit each, while the Panthers' Drew Leachman had three hits followed by two each from Ricco and Higginbotham. Drew Crofton improved to 5-0, while Hobs Donovan dropped to 1-2.

The Tigers dropped to 15-12 overall and 5-4 in the SCAC, while the Panthers improved to 20-6 overall and 7-2 in the conference. DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 8, when it travels to Rose-Hulman for a 6 p.m. game.
