Box Score

April 3, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. —  DePauw starter Brad Gerlach went the distance and the Tigers collected 12 hits on the way to a 9-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Birmingham-Southern in the first of a three-game series from Walker Field.

The Tigers improved to 15-10 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC, while the Panthers dropped to 18-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

DePauw's Justin Weiner led off the first with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third before coming home when Taylor Hoffman reached in an infield error. The Tigers made it 2-0 in the third as Ben Gardner singled with one out and advanced to second on an errant throw during a rundown following a pickoff attempt. Gardner stole third and scored on Weiner's groundout.

Drew Leachmann led off the Birmingham-Southern fourth with a bunt single, advanced to second on a balk and to third on a passed ball. He scored when Brian Higginbotham reached on an infield error. Higginbotham later scored on Alex Head's base hit through the left side.

DePauw regained the lead in the fourth when Mike Stout led off with a single and scored on Drew Holy's two-run homer to right. Brandon Ricco Ricco slugged a solo homer to right with two outs in the fifth to close the Tigers' lead to 4-3.

Hoffman was hit by a pitch to start the DePauw sixth before Stout singled. Rob McPike's sacrifice bunt moved the pair up a base before Jon Newman drove in Hoffman with a single and Holy plated Stout with a double to right center.

The Tigers added three in the seventh as Weiner singled and stole second and scored on Stout's base hit up the middle. McPike's single moved Stout to third and McPike advanced to second on a wild pitch. Newman doubled to right center to score both and wrap up the DePauw scoring.

Stout led the Tigers with three hits, while Weiner, Newman, Holy and Gardner each added two. Stout scored three with Newman and Holy each driving in three. The Panthers totaled 10 hits led by Ricco with three and Head with two.

Gerlach improved to 5-2 with his second complete game of the year, while Clay Malcolm dropped to 6-1 with the loss.

The teams face each other on Saturday in a Noon doubleheader. The teams were originally scheduled to play single games Saturday and Sunday, but the change was made due to a less than favorable weather forecast on Sunday.
