Tigers Split Twinbill with Little Giants

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

April 29, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. —  DePauw won game one of its doubleheader with visiting Wabash by a 2-1 score, but the Little Giants came back to claim a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Both teams are now 22-17 after the split.

The Tigers scored both of their runs of the opening game in the fifth inning as Alex Wright and Jack Gavin collected singles before Justin Weiner loaded the bases with a base hit to left center. Taylor Hoffman followed with a single through the middle which scored Wright and Gavin.

Wabash loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs, but couldn't push a run across the plate. P.J. Tyson and Chris Deig each singled with one out in the seventh and moved up on Jake Thomas' groundout. The Tigers intentionally walked Matt Dodaro to load the bases, but Derek Bailey drew a walk which scored Tyson and cut the DePauw lead to 2-1. Elliott Ross then entered in relief of DePauw starter Mike Peterson and struck out David Seibel to end the game.

DePauw totaled seven hits led by Weiner's two, while the Little Giants also had seven with Tyson and Seibel each finishing with two. Wabash left 11 runners stranded in the contest.

Peterson took the win and improved to 5-2, while Ross picked up his second save. Wabash starter Luke Zinsmaster dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

In the nightcap, DePauw starter J.B. Blanchard retired the first nine batters he faced including six on strikeouts. Tyson led off the fourth by reaching on a walk and moved to second on Deig's sacrifice bunt. Thomas was hit by a pitch.

Dodaro then hit a grounder to short, but the throw to second for the force out went into right field allowing Tyson to score. The runners then moved up on a passed ball and came home on Seibel's two-run single to center.

Mike Stout led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on Rob McPike's infield single. Jon Newman followed with a single to right center which scored Stout. Drew Holy then reached on a Wabash error at second with McPike scoring on the play. Matt Pustay later walked, but Keegan Leckrone entered for Wabash and got the Little Giants out of the inning.

Newman led the Tigers with two of their four hits, while Deig and Seibel each had one for the Little Giants.

Mike Korfhagen improved to 4-3 after pitching two innings of scoreless relief, while Blanchard suffered the loss despite allowing no earned runs, just two hits and striking out eight.

The second game loss snapped DePauw's 19-game win streak over the Little Giants and was the Tigers' first loss to the Little Giants since 1999.

DePauw wraps up the season this weekend as it travels to the University of Chicago for a Saturday doubleheader and to Washington-St. Louis for a Sunday twinbill.
