Box Score

2009SCACTourneyLogo.jpgApril 25, 2009, Jackson, Miss. —  DePauw jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, but Centre countered with five in the bottom of the inning, added three more in the second and two in the fourth and hung on for an 11-9 win over the Tigers in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.

DePauw dropped to 21-16 and was eliminated from the tournament, while Centre improved to 11-22 and plays Trinity tonight.

Rob McPike's first inning sacrifice fly scored Taylor Hoffman and Drew Holy smashed a three-run homer to right center to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead before the Colonels stepped to the plate.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Cameron Fishman drove in two with a double in the bottom half of the frame and Brandon Rosen hit a three-run homer to left center giving Centre a 5-4 lead.

They extended the lead to 8-4 in the second as Jeffrey Williams and Steven Proctor each singled and Fishman walked to load the bases. Jake Jones' sacrifice fly scored Williams, Rosen then singled, but an outfield error on the play allowed Proctor to cross the plate. Cory Crowdis then drove in Fishman after reaching on a fielder's choice.

Jones reached on an error with one out in the fourth and Crowdis made it 10-4 with a homer to right center.

Hoffman singled in the fifth and scored on Mike Stout's blast to center to make it 10-6. Justin Weiner led off the seventh by reaching on an error. He then stole second for his 41st of the season breaking the DePauw record of 40 set by Jim Hebert in 1987. The stolen base also was the sixth of the tournament for Weiner which established a new record.

Hoffman's single moved Weiner to third and Stout's base hit scored him. Jon Newman walked to load the bases and Holy singled home Hoffman. Sam Linette later reached on a fielder's choice after an error on the force play at second allowed Stout to score and close the Centre lead to 10-9.

John Starks led off the Centre seventh with a single and moved to second on Ryan Smith's sacrifice bunt. Steven Kull delivered a single to right center which scored Starks.

Weiner led off the eighth with a single, but Williams moved to the mound and retired the last six batters and preserve the win.

DePauw totaled 13 hits led by three each from Hoffman and Stout, while Weiner, McPike and Holy each had two. Hoffman and Stout each scored three and Holy drove in four. The Tigers' one stolen base was their 115th of the season which broke the school record of 114 set last year.

Rosen had four of Centre's 15 hits, while Starks added three. Williams and Proctor had two each, while Rosen and Crowdis each drove in three.

Hobs Donovan suffered the los and dropped to 2-3, while Aaron Herbert improved to 4-3 with the win and Williams picked up his first save of the season.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, April 29, for its final home games of the season when it entertains Wabash in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
