April 23, 2009, Jackson, Miss. — DePauw rallied to take a lead after trailing by three early, but Hendrix scored four in the ninth and took a 10-7 win over the Tigers in the opening game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

DePauw dropped to 20-15 with the loss, while Hendrix improved to 19-21. The Tigers face Rhodes in an elimination game tomorrow at Noon CDT. Trinity defeated the Lynx, 11-3, today.

Hendrix jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Clark Sims led off with a single and Daniel Ward followed with a walk. They each moved up a base on Nathan Harr's groundout. Sims scored on Matt Giza's sacrifice fly to left and Ward came home on Nathan Hill's double to right center.

The Tigers came right back in the bottom half of the frame as Justin Weiner reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on Taylor Hoffman's double. Mike Stout's sacrifice fly plated Weiner and Rob McPike's infield single scored Hoffman.

The Warriors regained the lead in the second as Kyle Raskin and Matt Gaglio singled and each moved up on a double steal. Sims then doubled them both home. Giza scored from third in the third inning when Jeff Forgerson grounded into a double play.

Jon Newman's fielder's choice scored Hoffman in the third before the Tigers added two more in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Ben Gardner drew a one-out walk, Weiner was again hit by a pitch and Hoffman walked to load the bases. Stout grounded into a fielder's choice against Hendrix reliever Wheeler Gnat scoring Gardner, while McPike's sacrifice fly brought home Weiner.

DePauw took a 6-5 lead in the sixth when Weiner led off with a double, moved to third on Hoffman's groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers put runners on third base twice in the eighth, but each was thrown out at the plate on fielder's choice grounders.

Hendrix loaded the bases in the ninth as the first three batters reached before Harr scored two with a single to center. Pinch-hitter Brad Grinstead then delivered a two-run single to right center to push the Warriors' lead to 10-6.

McPike led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and, after Newman walked and Drew Holy singled, he scored on Alex Wright's sacrifice fly.

DePauw totaled 10 hits as Hoffman, McPike, Holy and Gardner each had two. Weiner scored three of the Tigers' runs and his stolen base in the eighth broke the DePauw career record of 87 held by Jim Hebert (1986-87, 89). Weiner's 88 tied the SCAC career mark held by Trinity's Kenneth Sharp (2000-03).

Sims and Gaglio each had three of Hendrix's 15 hits, while Hill, Forgerson and Raskin each had two.

Gnat improved to 2-1 with the relief win, while Gerlach dropped to 7-3 with the loss.
