Box Score

April 19, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. —  DePauw wrapped up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season play with a series sweep of visiting Oglethorpe after taking a 7-6 win in today's series finale. The Tigers improved to 20-14 overall and 10-5 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe dropped to 19-17 overall and 4-7 in the SCAC.

With the win, the Tigers finished tied for the top spot in the SCAC East Division, but will be the division's top seed in the conference tournament which starts Thursday in Jackson, Miss. It marked the fifth time in DePauw's 11 years of SCAC play they've topped the division standings

DePauw took a 3-0 lead in the second as Rob McPike and Jon Newman led off with doubles. Drew Holy singled Newman to third before Alex Wright scored Newman with a single and Holy came home on Ben Gardner's double down the left field line.

Matthew Cornwell drew a one-out walk in the Oglethorpe third, moved to second on Jake Spear's single and scored on J.J. Rizzo's base hit. An infield error on Andy Farrey's grounder allowed Spear to score before Cliff Cross delivered a single to right to score Rizzo and tied the contest at 3-3.

The Stormy Petrels took the lead in the fourth on Jason Mitchell's solo homer to left, but DePauw came back in the fifth as McPike led off with a single and later scored on Holy's double. Wright then singled in Holy. Mike Stout drew a one-out walk in the sixth and advanced to third on McPike's single. Newman followed with a base hit that plated Stout and made it 6-4.

Oglethorpe tied the game in the seventh as Spear and Rizzo singled before Stephen Archer's base hit scored Spear. DePauw's Justin Weiner made a diving catch of Farrey's liner to center which scored Rizzo from third.

Gardner hit a line shot to left in the seventh that the Oglethorpe left fielder dropped and Weiner followed with a walk. Taylor Hoffman then singled to center scoring Gardner with the eventual game-winning run.

The Tigers' David Morefield came in to pitch the final two innings and secure the win for starter Mike Peterson.

DePauw totaled 14 hits led by McPike's four including two doubles. Holy and Gardner finished with three hits apiece and Wright added two. Spear and Rizzo each had three of the Stormy Petrels' 12 hits, while Farrey and Cross each had two.

Peterson improved to 3-2 with the win, while Morefield picked up his second save of the year. Oglethorpe reliever Mark Hoban suffered the loss and dropped to 5-4.

The Tigers open SCAC tournament play on Thursday at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss. DePauw takes on Hendrix in the tournament's opening game at Noon CDT.
