Box Score 2 April 11, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw rallied from a two-run deficit with three in the bottom of the eighth of the second game of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Centre and picked up a sweep of the Colonels.
The Tigers won the first game, 4-1, and took the nightcap by a 5-4 score. DePauw improved to 17-13 overall and 7-4 in the SCAC, while the Colonels dropped to 6-19 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Ben Gardner led off the eighth with a walk and Justin Weiner was hit by a pitch before Taylor Hoffman advanced each with a sacrifice bunt. The Colonels walked Mike Stout intentionally and brought in Brian Bascom to pitch to Rob McPike who ripped a two-run single down the right field line to tie the score at 4-4. Stout, who moved to third on the play, scored the eventual game-winner when Jon Newman lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
Centre scored all four of its runs in the first as Jeffrey Williams led off the game with a walk before Steven Proctor followed with a single and Cameron Fishman loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jake Jones grounded into a fielder's choice which allowed Williams to score.
Brandon Rosen then reached on a fielder's choice when the Tigers were unable to record the out at second and Proctor scored. An infield error allowed Jones to score and John Clark's fielder's choice plated Rosen.
DePauw countered with one in the second as Sam Linette walked and stole second before scoring on Gardner's single to center. The Tigers added another in the fifth when Stout walked and McPike drove him in with a double to left center.
McPike led the Tigers with three of their six hits and drove in three, while Drew Holy added two hits. DePauw left 15 runners stranded in the contest as 10 Tigers reached on walks and three were hit by pitches. Centre totaled five hits led by Rosen's two.
Elliott Ross picked up the win and improved to 4-1 after recording a pair of strikeouts in the eighth, while David Morefield collected his first save after throwing a scoreless ninth. Starter Hobs Donovan allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine in 7 1/3 innings. Ben Lause suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1.
In the opening game, Holy's solo homer in the second put the Tigers on the board before Linette reached on a walk in the same inning, moved to second on Jack Gavin's single and scored on Gardner's single up the middle.
Gavin and Gardner both singled in the fourth with Gavin coming home on Hoffman's single. Centre scored its lone run in the sixth when Jones and Rosen hit back-to-back doubles.
The Tigers added their final run in the eighth when Holy led off by being hit by a pitch. Chris Schenk came in to run for Holy and advanced to second on Alex Jacques' sacrifice bunt. Schenk then scored on Gavin's single to right.
DePauw totaled 10 hits led by Gavin's three and two each from McPike and Gardner. Centre finished with seven hits as Jeffrey Williams led with two. Brad Gerlach improved to 6-2 with the complete game win and struck out nine. Jones also went the distance and dropped to 2-2
The two teams square off tomorrow in a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
