Tigers Score 20 for Second Time in Three Games in Win at Sewanee

March 28, 2009, Sewanee, Tenn. —  For the second time in the last three games, DePauw scored at least 20 runs and today's result was a 23-11 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Sewanee.

The Tigers improved to 13-8 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC, while Sewanee dropped to 6-14 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The teams conclude their three-game set on Sunday.

Rob McPike's first inning three-run homer gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead before Sewanee scored one in the bottom of the frame when Taylor Irwin doubled home Taylor Burns.

DePauw added four in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead to 11-1. Sewanee scored one in the bottom of the sixth before DePauw added three in the seventh to make it 14-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers were two outs away from ending the game with the 10-run rule, but Sewanee sent 12 to the plate and scored nine times capped by Taylor Barrett's grand slam which made it 14-11.

The Tigers, however, countered with five in the eighth including a three-run homer from Mike Stout and four more in the ninth with Chris Schenk delivering a three-run blast.

DePauw totaled a season-high 23 hits including eight doubles, one triple and four homers. Just three days after setting the single-game school record with six hits, Ben Gardner collected four today. Taylor Hoffman, Stout, Jack Gavin and Sam Linette each had three while McPike, Jon Newman and Schenk had two apiece. Stout moved into second place on DePauw's all-time home run list with 15. Brian Shannon (1993-96) is the all-time leader with 20.

Sewanee had 14 hits as Barrett led with three. Burns, Irwin, Franklin Pogue, Rascoe Dean and Joe Reilly each had two.

Hobs Donovan improved to 1-1 with the win, while Gerg Bartleski dropped to 2-4 with the loss.
