DePauw Opens SCAC Series with Win at Sewanee

March 27, 2009, Sewanee, Tenn. —  DePauw fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but reached the scorebook in each of the next five innings and topped Sewanee by a 10-6 score in the opener of their three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series. The Tigers improved to 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC, while Sewanee dropped to 6-13 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Taylor Barrett led off the Sewanee first with a double and moved to third on Taylor Burns' single. Taylor Irwin followed with a single which scored Barrett. Franklin Pogue's groundout plated Burns before Trey Axe delivered a double which scored Irwin and gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers battled back with leadoff homers in four straight innings. Rob McPike put the Tigers on the board in the second with a leadoff homer before Sam Linette did the same in the third. Justin Weiner followed with a double and scored on Mike Stout's single to tie the game at 3-3.

Jon Newman gave the Tigers the lead as he started the fourth by going deep. Drew Holy hit a one-out double in the inning and scored on Ben Gardner's single. Taylor Hoffman made it 6-3 with a solo homer to start the fifth, while Jack Gavin drove in McPike with a single and Gavin scored on Holy's double. McPike's bases loaded groundout in the sixth scored Weiner and gave DePauw a 9-3 lead.

Pogue started the Sewanee sixth with a single and later scored on Joe Reilly's bases loaded single, but DePauw countered in the ninth with an unearned run as Chris Schenk scored when Weiner reached base on an error. Sewanee scored two in the ninth on Pogue's two-run, bases loaded single.

DePauw totaled 14 hits led by Hoffman's three and two each by Newman, Holy and Gardner. Sewanee finished with 11 hits paced by Pogue and Reilly with three each and Irwin with two.

Brad Gerlach improved to 4-2 after going eight innings and allowing just one run over his final seven frames and striking out nine in the game. Chris Mauro dropped to 1-5 with the loss.

The teams square off in a 1 p.m. CDT single game on Saturday.
