Box Score March 24, 2009, Winter Haven, Fla. — DePauw improved to 10-8 on the season following a 10-8 win over St. Thomas (Minn.) at the Russmatt Tournament. The Tommies dropped to 8-3 with the loss.
The Tommies took a 4-0 lead with three in the first and one in the second before DePauw scored two in the fourth on Taylor Hoffman's two-run homer.
St. Thomas added one in the fourth to extend its lead to 5-2, but DePauw knotted the score in the fifth on an RBI double by Ben Gardner and run-scoring singles off the bats of Justin Weiner and Rob McPike.
Matt Olson's fifth-inning double scored John Means as the Tommies regained the lead, 6-5. Chris Casella delivered a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put DePauw ahead, 7-6.
St. Thomas regained the lead with a pair in the bottom of the sixth on Roy Larson's bases loaded single and Tom Wippler's walk with the bases full. The Tigers' Elliott Ross came in and struck out three straight to end the threat.
DePauw evened the score at 8-8 in the eighth as Jack Gavin singled home Jon Newman. In the top of the ninth Hoffman singled with one out and moved to third on McPike's single. A wild pitch allowed Hoffman to score and McPike to advance to second before McPike later scored on Mike Stout's base hit.
The Tigers totaled 13 hits led by Hoffman, McPike, Newman, Gavin and Casella with two each. Dan Leslie and Matt McQuillan each finished with three of the Tommies' 12 hits. Larson added two hits, while McQuillan scored four.
Ross improved to 3-0 with four innings of scoreless relief in which he allowed just one hit. Bryce Gapinski suffered the loss.
The Tigers wrap up the Florida portion of their trip with a 12:15 p.m. game against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
