DePauw Splits Games with St. Olaf

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

March 23, 2009, Winter Haven, Fla. —  DePauw returned to action at the Russmatt Tournament today and lost the first game against St. Olaf by an 8-5 score before taking the second game, 4-3.

In the opener, the Tigers fell behind 6-0 after two innings as the Oles scored one in the first and five in the second. Five of the six runs were unearned as DePauw committed three errors in the opening two frames.

DePauw scored twice in the third as Jack Gavin's fielder's choice scored Justin Weiner and Sam Linette's sacrifice fly plated Taylor Hoffman.

St. Olaf added two more in the sixth on Tyler Johnson's two-run homer. Weiner reached in the seventh after being hit by a pitch and scored on Hoffman's triple. Mike Stout followed with a sacrifice fly allowing Hoffman to score.

Hoffman and Stout each collected two hits as the Tigers totaled seven as a team. Pat Wadzinski and Johnson each had two of the Oles' eight hits. Mike Peterson dropped to 2-2 with the loss, while Erik Olson improved to 2-0.

In the nightcap DePauw took a 1-0 lead as Weiner led off the first with a walk and eventually scored on Jon Newman's double. Todd Mathison reached base in the second on a DePauw error and later scored on Johnson's double. St. Olaf scored two in the seventh on back-to-back singles by Tyler Jones and Wadzinksi to take a 3-1 lead.

DePauw's Aaron Henry drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and moved to third when Linette reached on an error. Chris Schenk pinch-ran for Linette and Mike Stout, who pinch-hit for Ben Gardner, was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A wild pitch followed, allowing Henry to score before Weiner walked to again load the bases. Hoffman singled home Schenk to tie the game before Rob McPike drove in pinch-runner Chris Cassella with the game-winning run.

Weiner, Hoffman and Newman each totaled two of DePauw's six hits, while Jones and Wadzinski each had two of the Oles' seven hits.

David Morefield went the distance and improved to 2-0, while Brandon Agneberg dropped to 2-1 with the loss in relief of starter Peter Loizzo.

DePauw returns to action on Tuesday with a single game against St. Thomas (Minn.)
