Box Score March 15, 2009, Memphis, Tenn. — Mike Peterson hurled a four-hit, complete game shutout and the Tigers banged out 14 hits on the way to an 8-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Rhodes. The Tigers improved to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC, while the Lynx dropped to 13-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the third as Ben Gardner singled and moved to second on Taylor Hoffman's bunt single. With one out, each advanced on a stolen base before Gardner scored when Rob McPike reached on an error.
In the fourth, Drew Holy singled and moved to second on Alex Berlyn's walk. Gardner then loaded the bases with a bunt single. Holy scored on a passed ball before Mike Stout drove in Berlyn and Gardner with a single to center.
The Tigers extended the lead to 6-0 in the sixth when Hoffman walked and scored on Stout's double to left center. Jon Newman then singled with two outs, scoring Stout.
Hoffman led off the eighth with a double and Stout walked before McPike doubled in Hoffman and Jack Gavin plated Stout with a groundout.
Gardner led the Tigers with three hits, while Hoffman, Stout, Newman and Holy each collected two hits. Stout drove in three in the win. Four different Rhodes players collected one hit apiece.
Peterson improved to 2-1 with his first career shutout while allowing just four singles and striking out nine. Taylor Babich dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
DePauw returns to action on Sunday, March 22, when it opens play at the Russmat Baseball Tournament in Winter Haven, Fla. with single games against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and St. Thomas (Minn.).
