Tigers Score Five in Final Two Innings of Nightcap for SCAC Split at Rhodes

March 14, 2009, Memphis, Tenn. —  DePauw scored three in the eighth and two in the ninth of the nightcap of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill at Rhodes and earned a split with a 9-7 win. Rhodes won the first game by a 1-0 count.

DePauw is now 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC, while the Lynx are 13-7 overall and also 1-1 in the conference.

In the opening game, DePauw's Brad Gerlach and Rhodes' Andy Holt each tossed complete games with the host Lynx scoring the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Travis Perkins led off the sixth with a single, stole second and moved to third on J.R. Bizzell's sacrifice bunt. He then scored on Mason Mosby's single up the middle.

Jack Gavin and Drew Holy led off the DePauw fifth with singles, but the Tigers were unable to advance them. Gavin led off the seventh with a double but was stranded there.

Gavin led the Tigers with two of their five hits, while four different Rhodes' players collected one hit apiece. Gerlach, who held Rhodes hitless for four innings dropped to 3-1 while recording six strikeouts, allowing just four hits and walking just one. Holt remained unbeaten at 4-0 after striking out nine and walking just one in nine innings.

Rhodes got off to a strong start in the nightcap with four runs in the first as the first five hitters reached on one walk and four singles. DePauw cut the lead in half with a pair of unearned runs in the second and tied the score at 4-4 with two more in the fourth.

Gavin and Sam Linette started the inning with singles and moved up a base after Chris Schenk's sacrifice bunt. Ben Garder struck out swinging but the throw to first was errant allowing Gavin to score. Justin Weiner's groundout plated Linette.

The Lynx regained the lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings capped by Mosby's solo homer in the seventh. In the eighth, Schenk delivered a two-out single before Gardner followed with a bunt single. Alex Berlyn then drove in both with a double to right center and Taylor Hoffman knotted the score with a double to left center.

In the ninth Jon Newman singled with one out and moved to second when Gavin reached on an infield error. Schenk then drove in Newman with a single to center and Gavin scored on a wild pitch.

DePauw pounded out 14 hits led by Hoffman and Rob McPike with three each and Schenk with two. Mosby and Chris Conkel led Rhodes with three each of the team's 11 htis, while J.R. Bizzell and Brent Lindsey each finished with two.

Elliott Ross improved to 2-0 after allowing just one hit and striking out three in two innings in relief of starter Hobs Donovan. Max Gertz dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

The teams square off in a Noon CST single game on Sunday.
