Tigers Close out Regular Season with Sweep at Chicago

May 3, 2008, Chicago, Ill. - The 19th-ranked Tigers closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep at the University of Chicago by scores of 7-2 and 7-4. With the wins, DePauw improved upon its school-record win total and is now 35-11. Chicago dropped to 8-16.

In the opener, Matt Kleine led the way with three of the Tigers' 11 hits, while Taylor Hoffman, Mike Stout and Adam Ford each added two. Mike Serio had two of the Maroons' seven hits.

Stout's sacrifice fly in the first gave DePauw a 1-0 lead before Travis Blane's RBI single in the bottom half of the inning knotted the score. After Chicago took a 2-1 lead in the third, Kleine drove in one in the fifth with a sacrifice fly before Stout followed with a three-run homer.

Kleine and Ford added run-scoring singles in the seventh to wrap up the scoring. Jeremy Alland improved to 5-2 with the win, while Alex Gallan dropped to 1-4 with the loss.

The hosts took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second of the nightcap, but DePauw tied the contest at 3-3 in the fifth on Kleine's RBI single and Stout's two-run homer. Eric Reese's two-run homer in the sixth gave the Tigers the lead for good.

Sam Linette drove in a run in the seventh with a single and Tim Baldwin knocked in the second after reaching on a fielder's choice. The Maroons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

Stout and Linette each collected two of the team's 10 hits, while Kyle Schmitt and Nathan Ginsberg each had two of Chicago's 10 hits. With the two-homer day, Stout increased his season total to nine. Justin Weiner's three stolen bases lifted his season total to 39; just one shy of tying the DePauw single-season record.

Aaron Meyers improved to 7-2 after pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Marshall Oium dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

The Tigers will await word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship which would come on Sunday, May 11 or Monday, May 12.
