27th-ranked Tigers Sweep Sewanee Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

April 6, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - The 27th-ranked Tigers completed a four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series sweep over visiting Sewanee after taking today's games by 4-3 and 13-1 scores.

DePauw improved to 24-6 overall and 11-1 in the SCAC, while Sewanee dropped to 4-22 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

In game one, Ben Gardner capped a three-run seventh by scoring the game-winning run on Trey Axe's wild pitch on the first pitch of an attempted intentional walk.

Sam Linette started the rally with a leadoff double before Jon Newman moved him to third with an infield single. Kyle Thompson entered as a pinch-hitter and delivered a single through the right side which scored Linette and advanced Newman to third. After Gardner replaced Thompson as a pinch-runner, Eric Reese lifted a sacrifice fly to right.

Gardner moved to second on a wild pitch and Justin Weiner was hit by a pitch. Axe entered the game for starter Logan Ray and got Taylor Hoffman to ground out. The runners advanced on the play and the decision to intentionally walk Matt Kleine with first base open resulted in the wild pitch that allowed Gardner to score.

Sewanee took a 1-0 lead in the first as Taylor Irwin led off with a double and scored on Taylor Burns' single up the middle. DePauw knotted the score in the third after Jeremy Dickinson walked, stole second and came home on Weiner's double to right.

Richard Cassedy's sixth-inning single scored Irwin and Franklin Pogue's solo homer to left in the seventh pushed Sewanee's lead to 3-1.

Aaron Meyers pitched the complete game for DePauw and improved to 5-0, while Ray dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Mike Stout had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Irwin collected three of Sewanee's seven.

DePauw jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the nightcap with two in the first and three in the second and then added one in the fourth on Matt Kleine's triple to right which scored Gardner.

In the fifth, Pogue hammered a solo homer off the scoreboard in left for Sewanee's only run but the host Tigers scored seven in the sixth and blanked Sewanee in the seventh for the seven-inning win due to the 10-run rule.

DePauw totaled 11 hits with Kleine picking up three. Adam Ford and Reese each finished with two, while Kleine drove in four and finished with a single, double and triple. Six different Sewanee players finished with one hit apiece.

Brad Gerlach improved to 3-0 after allowing six hits over six innings, while Andrew Rowan dropped to 0-5 with the loss.

DePauw hosts Washington University on Tuesday for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
