19th-ranked DePauw Beats Southwestern and Advances in SCAC Tourney

April 25, 2008, Danville, Ky. - The 19th-ranked Tigers scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh and took control of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament game with Southwestern on the way to a 12-5 win.

DePauw improved to 33-9 and takes on Trinity at noon on Saturday. Southwestern dropped to the loser's bracket and to 22-19 on the season.

The Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third before the Tigers took the lead with two in the fourth on Jeremy Dickinson's two-run single. Southwestern regained the lead with three in the sixth before DePauw knotted the contest at 4-4 with two in the sixth on Jack Gavin's RBI singles and Dickinson's sacrifice fly.

After the Pirates regained the lead with a single run in the seventh, DePauw plated eight in the bottom of the inning on five hits and took advantage of four bases on balls. Gavin hit a two-run double to give the Tigers the lead for good and Matt Kleine wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single which lifted his career total to a DePauw-record 117, breaking the record of 116 by Zach Harris.

DePauw pounded out 16 hits as Kleine and Gavin had four apiece and Mike Stout followed with two. Gavin and Dickinson each drove in three and Stout scored three times. John Wooten and Mark Noggle each had two of Southwestern's seven.

John Tschantz went the distance and struck out 10 in improving to 8-3, while Brantley Freeman dropped to 3-5.
