April 22, 2008, Crawfordsville, Ind. - The 19th-ranked Tigers improved to 32-9 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader against Wabash at Crawfordsville High School. DePauw took the opener by an 11-3 score and completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in the nightcap. Wabash dropped to 17-19 with the losses.
It didn't take long for the Tigers to gain the early lead as Justin Weiner, game one's leadoff hitter, hammered a homer to right center. Ben Gardner followed with an infield single before Mike Stout reached on catcher's interference. After a two-out double steal, Gardner scored on Jon Newman's single to right.
Wabash countered with one in the bottom of the first as Tanner Coggins doubled home Bobby Ritz.
DePauw added three in the fourth as Stout again reached on catcher's interference and moved to second when Adam Ford reached on a Little Giant error. Newman's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and Jack Gavin folllowed with a two-run single up the middle.
Matt Kleine drew a one-out walk in the fifth, moved to third on Stout's single and scored on Ford's double to center to make it 6-1. Gavin led off the sixth with a double and Jeremy Dickinson followed with an infield hit. Eric Reese's sacrifice advanced the runners and Weiner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Drew Holy's single to left scored a pair and pushed the Tigers' lead to 8-1.
Wabash cut the margin to 8-3 in the sixth as Jake Thomas singled and moved to second on a DePauw infield error. Shaun Rico delivered a double which scored both runners.
Ford hit a two-run homer to left in the seventh and Dickinson added a solo homer to round out the scoring.
Weiner, Ford, Gavin and Dickinson each collected two of DePauw's 13 hits, while four different Little Giants totaled one hit apiece.
Brad Gerlach improved to 5-0 by allowing just three hits and one earned run over five innings, while Paul Rodenhouse allowed an unearned run in two innings. Andy Weeks suffered the loss and dropped to 3-4.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four in the bottom of the first of the nightcap as Weiner and Taylor Hoffman opened with singles. Hoffman stole second and Weiner scored on a throwing error on the play. Kleine was hit by a pitch and Hoffman scored on a failed pickoff attempt of Kleine at first. Stout doubled home Kleine and later scored on Sam Linette's single.
DePauw added two in the third on Ford's solo homer and Reese's single which scored Kyle Thompson who doubled earlier in the frame.
Wabash's two runs came in the top of the fifth as Thomas singled and advanced to second when the Tigers failed to get the force at second on Bobby Ritz's grounder. Matt Dodaro's single loaded the bases. Another throwing error on a force play of Coggins' grounder allowed both Thomas and Ritz to score.
Weiner had two of DePauw's nine hits in the contest as eight different Tigers collected hits. Wabash totaled six hits led by Thomas with two.
Derek Bryant improved to 4-1 after allowing just two unearned runs and five hits in five innings. Mike Peterson and Paul Rodenhouse finished the game by pitching one scoreless inning each. Mike Korfhagen dropped to 3-3 with the loss.
DePauw returns to action on Friday when it travels to Danville, Ky., to compete in the four-team, double-elimination Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Tigers open the tournament against Southwestern at 4:30 p.m.
