Box Score April 18, 2008, Millington, Tenn. - The 14th-ranked Tigers were shut out for the first time this season and dropped the first game of their best-of-three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross-Divisional series to Austin College by a 7-0 score.
DePauw dropped to 28-9 with the loss, while Austim improved to 18-22. Game two is scheduled for 2 p.m. CDT on Saturday.
Austin took a 1-0 lead in the second as Bennett Herrick led off with a double and scored on Patrick Ray's single. They added two each in the third when Andy White led off with a double and scored after Scooter Merritt reached base on an error. Merritt later scored on Herrick's sacrifice fly.
In the fourth Merritt drove in a run with a single and John Reisig's squeeze bunt plated Matt Finke. Means' single in the seventh scored Herrick and Bobby Schleizer's eighth-inning single scored Merritt.
Cory Stevens improved to 6-5 after allowing just eight singles and totaling 10 strikeouts in the complete game win. DePauw's John Tschantz, who entered the series as the SCAC's ERA leader, allowed four earned runs and 13 hits in 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
Merritt, Herrick and Ray each had three of the Kangaroos' 16 hits, while Schleizer added two. Kyle Thompson collected two of DePauw's eight hits. Austin turned three double plays in the win.
