Box Score 2 March 22, 2008, Birmingham, Ala. - DePauw improved to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference after sweeping a doubleheader at Birmingham-Southern by scores of 8-0 and 11-3. The Panthers dropped to 10-9 with the losses.
Jeremy Alland allowed six hits and struck out four in improving to 2-1 with the complete game shutout in game one.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first after Ben Gardner homered to left and then scored seven in the sixth. Two runs scored on Mike Stout's single and two more on Kyle Thompson's triple.
Gardner finished with three of DePauw's seven hits, while four others had one hit apiece. Drew Leachman and Reed Tuttle each collected two hits for the Panthers. Richard Vance dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
In the nightcap, Birmingham-Southern took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings before the Tigers knotted the score at 2-2 with one each in the third and fourth innings.
The Panthers regained the lead with one in the fourth, but the Tigers scored four in the sixth on Thompson's two-run single and run-scoring singles by Eric Reese and Justin Weiner.
DePauw added two in the seventh and three in the eighth on Mike Stout's three-run homer to left.
John Tschantz improved to 4-1 by allowed just two earned runs in seven innings, while Michael McCalib suffered the loss and dropped to 1-1.
The Tigers totaled 11 hits with Stout, Taylor Hoffman, Sam Linette and Reese each collecting two. Stout drove in three, while Linette and Thompson finished with two RBI each.
Anthony Bianchi paced the Panthers with three of their 10 hits, while Sam Hill had two.
The teams play in a Sunday single game beginning at 1:30 p.m. CDT.
