Tigers top Engineers in extra innings

April 18, 2007, Terre Haute, Ind. - Eric Reese's single to left in the top of the 11th and Matt Kleine's sacrifice fly lifted DePauw to an 11-9 victory at Rose-Hulman. The Tigers improved to 23-14 overall, while the Engineers dropped to 17-12.

 

Jack Gavin led off the 11th with a double and moved to third on Taylor Hoffman's single to left before Reese delivered the game-winner. Kleine's flyout to left scored Hoffman with the final run. Kleine then set the Engineers down in order to record his first save.

 

The Tigers scored one run in each of the first three innings before Rose-Hulman took a 4-3 lead in the third and added three more in the fourth.

 

Kleine hit a two-out solo homer in the fifth that started a four-run which tied the game at 7-7. Adam Ford's sixth-inning double scored Kleine and gave DePauw an 8-7 advantage. Chandler Kent's seventh-inning single plated Gabe Focke and tied the score at 8-8.

 

Each team added one in the eighth and the Engineers still had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth before DePauw third baseman Jeremy Dickinson threw out Todd Clementoni at the plate on a fielder's choice and Tigers' reliever David Morefield struck out Josh Nash.

 

Rose-Hulman loaded the bases again in the ninth before DePauw releiver Paul Rodenhouse retired Adam Knaack on a flyout to right. Rodenhouse ended the Engineers' 10th inning threat as well after Rose-Hulman loaded the bases with one out.

 

Michael Matsui hit a grounder back to Rodenhouse and he threw out Andrew Bilse at the plate before Matt Salisbury ended the inning with a groundout to second.

 

Rodenhouse improved to 3-3 with the victory, while Joe Valerioti dropped to 1-2.

 

Taylor Hoffman collected four of DePauw's 22 hits, while Kleine, Gavin, Jeremy Dickinson and Justin Weiner each added three. Reese and Drew Holy finished with two hits each. Kleine drove in four in the win.

 

Rose-Hulman totaled 12 hits with Matsui leading the way with three. Kent, Tim Braun and Kellen Hurst each added two.

 

DePauw returns to action on Friday, April 20, when it faces opens its Best-of-Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Divisional Playoff series with Southwestern at 5 p.m. CDT.
