Tigers sweep doubleheader at Rhodes

March 24, 2007, Memphis, Tenn. - DePauw opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Rhodes by scores of 4-2 and 8-5. The Tigers improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the SCAC and ended Rhodes' 16-game winning streak, while the Lynx dropped to 22-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

 

Jeremy Alland allowed just five hits over 6 2/3 innings in improving to 2-1, while Paul Rodenhouse collected his fourth save by getting the last out. Rhodes' Andy Holt suffered his first loss in eight decisions.

 

Kyle Thompson's RBI single gave DePauw a 1-0 lead in the second, while J.R. Bizzell's triple in the third tied the game.

 

Adam Ford's two-run double in the sixth gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead before Matt Beesley's run-scoring double in the bottom of the inning made it 3-2. The Tigers closed out the scoring in the seventh on Chris Newman's RBI double.

 

Matt Kleine and Jack Gavin each had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Bizzell collected two of Rhodes' five.

 

In the nightcap, Mike Stout put DePauw ahead in the first with a run-scoring groundout before Rhodes took a 2-1 lead in the second on Brooks Royer's two-run double.

 

DePauw blew the game open with five in the third and two in the fourth. Stout, Ford and Gavin hit consecutive doubles to make it 5-2 before Jon Newman singled home Gavin. In the fourth, Stout drove in one with a single, while Ford drove in another with a double.

 

Rhodes added one in the fifth and two in the seventh, but Rodenhouse notched his fifth save with a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.

 

John Tschantz improved to 2-0 with the win, while Chris Catalanotto dropped to 3-1.

 

Stout paced the Tigers with three hits and four RBI while Kleine, Ford and Jon Newman each had two of DePauw's 12 hits. Mason Mosby, Beesley and Brett Miller each had two of Rhodes' eight hits.

 

The two teams wrap up the series with a Sunday doubleheader.
