DePauw and Rose-Hulman split SCAC doubleheader

April 8, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw split its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Rose-Hulman as the Tigers won the opener 9-3 and the Engineers took the nightcap, 4-3. The Tigers are 12-15 overall and 4-6 in the SCAC, while the Engineers are 13-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

 

In game one, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead with two in the first, one in the second and four in the third. DePauw banged out 12 hits with Greg DeBeer and Kyle Dobbs each going 3-for-3 and Zach Harris adding two hits. Dobbbs finished with two triples to push his DePauw career-record total to 14. Kellen Hurst had two of the Engineers' nine hits.

P.J. Mitchell improved to 5-4 with the complete game win and struck out four without allowing a walk. Michael Matsui dropped to 3-2 and allowed just three earned runs in six innings.

In the second game, DePauw again took an early lead with single runs in the second and fourth innings before Rose-Hulman's Matt Pepelea hit a sixth-inning, two-out grand slam down the right field line to give the Engineers a 4-2 lead. The Tigers added one in the ninth on Matt Deahl's RBI single, but Rose-Hulman reliever Sam Deters struck out the final two Tigers with the potential tying run at third.

Deahl had two of the Tigers' seven hits, while Adam Knaack led the Engineers with three of their nine hits. Todd Clementoni improved to 2-4 with 7 2/3 innings of work and Deters picked up his fourth save and struck out three in the final 1 1/3 innings. John Kihlken dropped to 4-3 after going six innings. DePauw left 13 runners stranded with at least one in every innings.

The teams square off in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
