Five-run eighth lifts Tigers to win over Franklin

April 5, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - Host DePauw scored five runs in the eighth against Franklin after trailing by as many as five on two occasions and defeated the Grizzlies 12-9. The Tigers improved to 11-14 with the win, while Franklin dropped to 11-9.

The Tigers entered the bottom of the eighth trailing 9-7 and Chris Newman led off by reaching base on an error. Matt Kleine singled and Greg DeBeer followed with a single that scored Newman. Justin Weiner pinch ran for DeBeer and Kleine tied the game by scoring on a balk. Matt Deahl singled and Matt Drew was hit by a pitch loading the bases.

Kyle Dobbs singled to right scoring Weiner with the eventual game-winning run. Adrian Norris drew a bases loaded walk which plated Deahl before Zach Harris drove in Drew with a sacrifice fly to center.

Franklin jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first as David Verdeyen knocked in two with a double before Frank Marino drove in one with a groundout. Verdeyen then scored from third on a wild pitch and Lance LaBonte lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Ben Werner.

DePauw countered with three in the bottom of the first as Jeremy Dickinson led off with a walk and moved to second on Chris Newman's bunt single. Greg DeBeer then homered to left center to close the gap to 5-3.

Franklin made it 8-3 in the fourth on Nate Roberts solo homer to left and Swienconek's two-run shot to left center. Matt Kleine's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth closed the margin to 8-5. The Grizzlies added its final run in the sixth when Roberts stole home as part of a double steal. The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on Deahl's two-run double to right.

P.J. Mitchell improved to 4-4 after pitching a scoreless 1 2/3 innings in relief, while Brian Rejer dropped to 0-2.

The Tigers banged out 12 hits with Deahl leading the way with three. Newman, Kleine, DeBeer and Dobbs each collected two. Franklin totaled 10 hits with Roberts, Werner and Adam Blackburn each finishing with a pair.

DePauw hosts Rose-Hulman in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
