Box Score 2 April 23, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw matched a season best with 21 hits on the way to a 20-5 win over Sewanee in the opener of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Sewanee. Sewanee won the nightcap by an 11-8 score.
DePauw is 17-21 overall and finished second in the SCAC East Division at 8-8, earning a spot in the SCAC Tournament which begins on Thursday morning. Sewanee is 16-23 overall and 7-9 in the SCAC and earned the number three seed in the East with the split.
In the opener, the Tigers fell behind 4-0 as Sewanee scored four in the second. Frank Morris an J.R. Candlish had RBI singles, while Sean Hilley delivered a two-ru double.
DePauw sent 17 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second and scored 13 runs on 10 hits to take the lead for good. Kyle Dobbs hit a two-run homer to right center for the first two runs before Matt Kleine delivered a two-run single to tie the game.
Chris Newman added an RBI single to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead before the Tigers plated eight more with two outs. Greg DeBeer and Kyle Dobbs followed with run-scoring singles before Jeremy Dickinson drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-4.
A Sewanee error allowed another DePauw run to score before Eric Reese and Kleine each drove in two with singles.
Sewanee added its final run in the third on Frank Morris' sacrifice fly. The Tigers added two each in the fourth and fifth and three in the sixth to wrap up the scoring.
Kleine led the Tigers with four hits and six RBI, while Dobbs and Jesse Groh each had three hits. Newman, DeBeer, Zach Harris, Dickinson and Reese each had two hits. Dickinson drove in four and scored five in the win.
Sewanee totaled nine hits led by Candlish and Carter Thurman with two each.
Jeremy Alland improved to 4-1 after pitching the first four and Bill Metzinger collected his third save after going three innings and retiring all nine batters he faced. Will King dropped to 3-5 with the loss.
In the second game, each team totaled 19 hits, but it was Sewanee that scored four in the third to take a 5-1 lead which it would not relinquish.
Taylor Burns led Sewanee with five hits including a solor homer in the sixth. Candlish added four hits, while Casey Cook and Thurman each had three and Hilley followed with two.
Justin Weiner led DePauw with four hits followed by Kyle Thompson, Matt Drew and Jack Gavin with three each. Adam Ford and Cass Sisler each added two. Thompson hit a solo homer in the first.
Daniel Shaver improved to 3-3 with the win and Josh Curtis earned his third save with one pitch in the ninth. Eric Mattingly dropped to 0-3 with the loss.
DePauw opens SCAC tourament play on Thursday, April 27, at 10 a.m. against Millsaps at Tomahawk Stadium in Winchester, Tenn.
