Box Score 2 February 23, 2006, Anderson, Ind. - The DePauw baseball team opened the 2006 season with a split of its doubleheader at Anderson. The Tigers dropped the first game by a 1-0 score and won the nightcap, 5-3.
In the opener, the host Ravens scored the game's only run in the first when Zach Sounhein led off with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on a bunt and scored on Aaron Woolsey's ground out.
DePauw totaled just three hits off of Anderson starter Brandon Meadows, but left nine runners stranded including three in the first and two in the seventh. Tiger starter P.J. Mitchell went the distance allowing eight hits while striking out seven and walking just one. Meadows struck out three and walked five in his seven innings.
Matt Kleine led the Tigers with a pair of hits with Chris Newman adding the other. Sounhein went 3-for-3 for the Ravens and Peter Whiting was 2-for-2.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two as Kyle Dobbs singled, Zach Harris was hit by a pitch and Kleine reached base on an error off of a sacrifice bunt. Dobbs was out trying to score on the play, but Harris and Kleine moved up on a passed ball. Newman's single scored both of them. The Ravens scored one in the bottom of the inning on Woolsey's single that scored Whiting.
DePauw scored three in the fifth when Newman led off with a single, Matt Deahl walked and Adrian Norris advanced them with a bunt. Newman scored on an infield error before Matt Drew singled scoring Greg DeBeer.
Anderson scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on Woolsey's single and Andrew Butts' sacrifice fly. DePauw's Eric Mattingly came in to get the final out with runners on first and second and collect the save.
Newman collected two hits and drove in two runs to pace the Tigers. Dan Angle and Woolsey each had two hits for the Ravens.
John Kihlken picked up the win while allowing just five hits in four innings with seven strikeouts. Clint Valentine suffered the loss.
DePauw is scheduled to host Transylvania in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
