Tigers clinch SCAC East title with split at Rose-Hulman

April 9, 2005, Terre Haute, Ind. - DePauw scored two runs in the top of the seventh of the second game of their doubleheader at Rose-Hulman to earn a split of the twinbill and clinch the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's top seed in the conference tournament.

 

DePauw won the second game by a 7-5 score after dropping the first game, 4-1. The Tigers are 23-10 overall and 12-3 in the SCAC, while the Engineers are 16-11 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The two teams meet in a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Terre Haute and the game can be heard on WGRE.

DePauw jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as Greg DeBeer's double scored Ryan Sipe who earlier singled. Rose-Hulman tied the score in the second when Brad Jones doubled home Scott Tourville.

The Tigers regained the lead in the third as John Younger doubled and scored on Chris Newman's double, but the Engineers scored twice in the fourth on solo homers by Shawn Smith and Jimmy Murray to take a 3-2 lead.

Chris Newman, DeBeer and Matt Deahl singled to load the bases in the fifth before Zach Harris delivered a two-run single. Adrian Norris added a sacrifice fly to center to give DePauw a 5-3 lead.

The Engineers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth as pinch-hitter Tim Braun doubled. Todd Clementoni pinch ran for Braun and scored on Josh Nash's single. Nash later scored on Matt Pepelea's single to tie the game at 5-5.

In the seventh Deahl singled with one out and Harris was hit by a pitch. Norris followed with an RBI single and Kyle Dobbs singled to left to score Harris.

The Tigers pounded out 14 hits with Newman leading the way with three followed by DeBeer, Deahl and Matt Kleine with two each. The Engineers finished with eight hits led by Nash with two. John Tschantz improved to 4-1 with the win, while John Kihlken picked up his first save after a scoreless seventh. Sam Deters dropped to 0-2 with the loss in relief of Michael Matsui.

In the first game, Rose-Hulman reached the board in the third on Jones' solor homer to left center. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth as Sipe and Deahl singled and Norris drove home Sipe with a single through the left side.

The Engineers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Salisbury singled, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Tourville's double to center. Rose-Hulman added two more in the sixth as Nash and Pepelea singled and Salisbury walked to load the bases. Tourville hit a sacrifice fly to center and Smith singled home Pepelea.

Newman and Harris each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while seven different Engineers had one hit apiece. Josh Hogan improved to 2-2 by going six innings and Jones picked up the save with an inning of scoreless relief. Mark Alson dropped to 5-2 after allowing seven hits.
