Box Score April 6, 2005, Franklin, Ind. - Host Franklin scored four in the bottom of eighth to erase a two-run DePauw lead and defeat the Tigers, 11-9. DePauw dropped to 21-9, while the 30th-ranked Grizzlies improved to 13-5.
DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead as the first three batters reached base. Greg DeBeer drove in John Younger with a sacrifice fly and Matt Deahl singled home Chris Newman. Franklin trimmed the lead in half in the bottom of the innings as Terry Kinnett hit a solo homer off the foul pole in right.
The Tigers added two more in the second on Newman's single that scored Zach Harris and Ryan Sipe's groundout that scored Kyle Dobbs. The Grizzlies again responded with four in the bottom of the second as Ben Werner and David Verdeyen led off the frame with consecutive homers. Lance LaBonte's single scored Nathan Roberts and Sean Toler to give the Grizzlies a 5-4 lead.
Harris' two-run homer to left center in the third gave DePauw a 6-5 advantage. The Tigers added three more in the fifth on Newman's two-run single and then Newman scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 9-5 lead.
Cody Kirkman's double down the left field line in the fifth scored Jeremy Neibert and Verdeyen's single through the left side plated Kirkman to close the Tigers lead to 9-7.
In the eighth, Toler ripped a solo homer to left before LaBonte singled and moved to third on Josh Stoner's double. Neibert loaded the bases with a walk before Kinnett singled to right center scoring LaBonte and Stoner. Kirkman followed with a base hit that brought Neibert home.
DePauw totaled 14 hits with Newman and Deahl leading the way with three. DeBeer, Harris and Dobbs each collected two with Newman driving in three runs. Franklin pounded out 15 hits with three each by Kirkman, Verdeyen and LaBonte. Kinnett and Toler each added two.
Dustin Eck improved to 3-0 with the relief win, while Brian Scott dropped to 1-2 with the loss. Kyle Limbach notched his first save of the season by retiring the Tigers in order.
DePauw returns to action on Friday with the first of a four-game series at Rose-Hulman. Friday's single game begins at 7 p.m. and all four games can be heard live on WGRE-FM.
