Tigers tie school win record; seniors equal four-year mark

April 27, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Jon Gratz's bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch-runner Luther Selby and gave DePauw a 9-8 victory over visiting Hanover. Greg DeBeer tied the game in the ninth with a two-run single to center after the Tigers entered the frame trailing 8-6.

 

DePauw improved to 28-13, while Hanover dropped to 11-22. The win equaled the DePauw school record set last season and marked the 101st for the seniors which equals the best four-year record in school history.

Matt Kleine led off the ninth with a single and moved to third on Chris Newman's double before DeBeer ripped the single to tie the game and moved to second on the throw. Selby came in to run for DeBeer and Matt Deahl was intentionally walked. Zach Harris drew a walk to load the bases before Gratz walked to score the game winner.

Hanover jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead as they collected five hits. Todd Miller's single to left scored Dan Gillin and Kyle Walden's base hit scored Miller.

Harris doubled and Kevin McAteer singled in the third before Kyle Davis ripped his first collegiate home run over the fence in right to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Newman later doubled home Kleine to push the margin to 4-2.

Rob Gumerson's sacrifice fly in the sixth scored Kyle Pinkham and cut the DePauw lead to 4-3, but the Tigers added two in the bottom of the inning on Kyle Dobbs' double that scored Adrian Norris and Kleine's single that plated Dobbs to make it 6-3.

The Panthers totaled six hits in the seventh and scored four times to take a 7-6 lead. Kyle Wynn's RBI double scored Thomas Hopkins and Miller scored on a wild pitch. Walden singled home Wynn and Steve Huff doubled to score Walden. Hanover added one more in the ninth as Gumerson doubled to right center scoring Huff.

John Kihlken improved to 4-0 after allowing one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Kyle Morrison dropped to 3-4 after giving up three runs in one-third of the ninth inning.

DePauw totaled 13 hits with Kleine and Newman each finishing with three. Davis drove in three and DeBeer two in the win. Miller collected four of Hanover's 16 hits, while Hopkins and Walden each added three and Wynn finished with two.

The Tigers wrap up the season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. EDT doubleheader at Thomas More.
