Box Score April 23, 2005, Conway, Ark. - The DePauw baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Southwestern University in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament.
DePauw scored one in the bottom of the first as Chris Newman singled with one out and moved to third on an infield hit and throwing error by the Pirates. Matt Deahl reached on an error that scored Newman.
Southwestern tied the score in the sixth when pinch-hitter Chris Norris singled with two outs. Ross Loewe followed with a walk before Matt Odom doubled home Norris. Loewe was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Will Paton singled to right field scoring Ryan Bellomy from first.
DePauw knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Newman led off with a bunt single. He later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Greg DeBeer followed with a single up the middle that scored Newman.
The Tigers missed an excellent opportunity in the eighth when Zach Harris led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on Adrian Norris' sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Kevin McAteer then drew an intentional walk. Harris got caught in a rundown between third and home after a Southwestern wild pitch and eventually was put out.
In the ninth, Patric Mascorro reached on a DePauw throwing error and moved to second on DeCuir's sacrifice bunt. After Bellomy was intentionally walked, Paton singled to left center to score Mascorro. Bellomy scored on Teddy Kreder's single to right center. The Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
John Tschantz suffered the loss for the Tigers deslite allowing just seven hits over 8 1/3 innings. Tschantz dropped to 4-2. Chris Callicut improved to 5-2 with the win as he allowed just two unearned runs. Brad Mathis notched his second save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Tigers finished with 10 hits as Newman had four and DeBeer added two. Norris, Odom and Paton each had two of the Pirates eight hits. DePauw stranded 10 runners in the contest including three each in the second and sixth innings and two in the first.
DePauw dropped to 27-13 and return to action on Wednesday, April 27, when they host Hanover at 3 p.m. Southwestern improved to 29-11 with the victory.
