Box Score 2 April 2, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw improved to 19-8 overall and 8-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Centre. The Tigers won the first game 4-2 and took the nightcap 16-0. Centre dropped to 10-12 overall and 4-4 in the SCAC.
P.J. Mitchell tossed a three-hitter in the first game and threw just 58 pitches in improving to 4-2. During one stretch the junior retired 13 straight. Jarrod Williams dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
The Tigers scored twice in the third on Chris Newman's two-run single. Kevin McAteer added an RBI single in the fourth and Ryan Sipe followed with a run-scoring single in the fifth to make it 4-0. Eric Moore hit a two-run homer in the sixth for Centre's only runs. DePauw finished with seven hits as Newman had two along with two RBI.
In the nightcap, Mark Also improved to 5-1 with a four-hit shutout, while Lance Sizemore dropped to 1-3. The Tigers scored two in the first on an RBI groudnout by Sipe and a run-scoring single by Greg DeBeer. They then added six in the second as Zach Harris drove in one with a single to left center and John Younger delivered a two-run single. Sipe added an RBI double with DeBeer contributing a run-scoring groundout and Matt Deahl folowing with an RBI single.
The Tigers had 11 hits with two each from Younger, Newman, DeBeer and Harris. Ben Jeffers had a pair for the Colonels.
The two teams square off in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
